The Armored Cannon Beetle is the adult stage of an Armored Cannon Beetle Larva. It is a large, black, almost shiny beetle with a thick, rounded shell of armor and a blowhole above its head. It attacks by inhaling through this opening and subsequently firing a boulder from its mouth that travels in a straight path, which crushes any small creature in its path and only stops when it hits a wall or another enemy. To defeat the creature, one must attack its abdomen: attacking other parts of the creature won't damage it.

A single Armored Cannon Beetle guards the Green Onion in the Tundra of Repose.

Notes

Olimar's observations

Armored Cannon Beetle. Granitus chukkulinae. Lithopod family. The lithopod's diet of rocks and minerals is not without its advantages, and none demonstrate this idea better than the ability of the Armored Cannon Beetle to fire chunks of partially-digested stone as projectiles. As the beetle matures, its diet provides the materials for its exoskeleton to develop into a nigh-impenetrable shell. However, the blowhole in the insect's forehead is left uncovered, allowing the creature to compress air in an internal bladder and utilize the pressure to fire its stony projectiles. As the blowhole is also used for thermal regulation, a blockage in the system will force the beetle to open its carapace to vent, leaving it vulnerable to attacks. Initially, it was assumed that the adults would not survive in the ecosystem, but a sighting has since been confirmed in a cold tundra, likely where the thermoregulation property of the carapace openings would be most effective.

Louie's cookbook

Adult Cannon Beetles are far heartier than their larval counterparts, but not as sweet. Rather than slurping the meat raw, it is recommended to crack open the shell with an industrial-grade nutcracker and boil the meat and bodily fluids in a mixture of milk and herbs. When properly set at room temperature, the result is a tasty and hearty blood pudding of sorts.

Sagittarius' taming notes

The Cannon Beetle's tough shell makes it a very durable specimen, making it practical as a guard pet. In order to keep the specimen's diet healthy and provide sufficient ammo, it is recommended to feed it whole slabs of granite, diorite, andesite, and other igneous rocks three times a day. The beetle's digestive tract will refine the sharp slabs into perfect boulders, ready for launching at burglars. Just don't forget your homeowner's insurance, in case a stray boulder goes through a wall.

Libra's fashion notes

A healthy Armored Cannon Beetle has a sleek black shell, one that is perfect for formal parties. Chipping off chunks of stone-infused chitin and sewing them into the fabric of a tuxedo will yield the ultimate in formal wear: not only fashionable, but also offers decent protection against attackers. Also fashionable for the military!

Charlie's battle strategies

As grim as it sounds, we kind of have to suffocate the creature by plugging its blowhole. Only then will it expose its overheating behind, making it vulnerable to attack. Despite the sweltering internal temperatures, the exposed flesh is not hot enough to seriously burn Pikmin; however, it is still recommended to bring Red Pikmin to finish off the creature faster, for your sake and the beetle's.

Derrick's grimoire

The creature's digestive acids are some of the strongest solvents in this galaxy, which is a given considering that they literally eat rocks. Darts tipped in the acid will be excruciatingly painful for any creature stuck by the darts, potentially corroding a hole in the creature's flesh. This makes the acid practical for hunting, as shooting a creature in the knee with the dart will disable it as if it had been shot with a bullet.

Attacks Fires boulders, stuns Pikmin, causes panic

The Armored Cannon Beetle is a miniboss in Pikmin: Ultimate Doom, and its larva is absent. It is much stronger, as it can stomp on the ground, stunning all Pikmin within the range of the tremor before it shoots out a boulder to crush them. It can also fly into a rampage and run around, and any Pikmin it touches during that time will begin to panic. Any Pikmin it makes panic it will launch a boulder at.
