Scientific name Porcellus barbavolta
Family Numbouse

The Bearded Amprat is a numbouse that attacks Pikmin by generating electricity, stunning any, except Yellow Pikmin, it touches. Normally, the creature passively walks about its territory, but when Pikmin or a leader come close, it will rapidly stroke its beard to generate electricity, causing its hair to flare up and reveal its face as it charges to try and grab Pikmin and eat them. After a short period of being on the attack, or after being left alone, the amprat will return to its idle behaviors.

The Bearded Amprat is a mammalian creature returning in Pikmin Eco. While the Bearded Amprat doesn't appear until after completing the game's story mode, its weaker relative, the Cloven Amprat, appears throughout it. The Bearded Amprat behaves as it does in Pikmin 3: it will rub its beard with its front paws to generate an electric charge before charging at Pikmin, electrocuting those, except Yellow Pikmin, that get caught in it if it doesn't eat them first.

Billy is the Bearded Amprat that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. Billy's electrical charge allows him to be used to power plasteel machinery, and his hair can be sheared to be used as extra thread, though this leaves him unable to use his electrical abilities as well as much more susceptible to the cold for a few days while his hair regrows.

Billy speaks with a stereotypical American English Southern dialect, with the sort of speech patterns often associated with American cowboys, using words such as "yee-haw" and "howdy". His accent makes him come off as dumb to some Diamond Settlement residents, but Billy is actually quite clever, sometimes playing into others' perceptions of him to lead them to underestimate him.

Billy is also, surprisingly, capable of herding and commanding Pikmin. He can use a combination of squeaks and electrical sounds to simulate the whistle commands used by leaders and creatures like the Antenna Beetle, which Pikmin respond to effectively. Billy is also skilled at keeping Pikmin squads from scattering by using tactics similar to that of a sheep dog to herd them together, and he can even throw Pikmin at targets using his front paws, with a throwing ability comparable to any leader. Billy can also carry Pikmin on his back, similar to a space dog.

Billy is omnivorous and enjoys a variety of foods, but he strictly refuses to eat Pikmin, as he finds them cute and friendly.

Billy's name is directly taken from the internal name and Japanese name of the Bearded Amprat, which is "Billy".

The Bearded Amprat is a rodent-like creature in Pikmin: Before the Impact that creates static electricity by rubbing its fur, causing it to become electrified. While it is electrified, it can eat Pikmin.

Notes

Stevvy’s observations

This furry fella uses the power of static electricity to charge up the fur on its body to scare away any predators. I mean, I would run away too if I had to see that horrifying face under all that fur! Yeesh...

Natti’s cookbook

The body is the heartiest part of this creature. Sprinkle in some garlic powder, cayenne, and lemon juice, and make it into spicy Amprat patties that are sure to leave your mouth crackling! The lemon juice pairs well with the lingering electricity.

Stop that numbouse before it covers itself in volts! – The ship, upon discovering the Bearded Amprat

The Bearded Amprat is a returning species of numbouse that appears in Pikmin: Pitstop. They resemble a hybrid of a rat and a dog, having a body coated in white fur with brown spots, and pink skin, a white tail, two eyes with white sclerae and black pupils, and four legs. It also has a set of yellow buckteeth covered by a hanging coat of hair, but they can only be seen when the numbouse rubs its hair and creates static electricity.

The Bearded Amprat will wander around its territory until Pikmin approach. When they do, it will begin to rub its fur, which will result in it generating electricity around it. This means any non-Yellow Pikmin that try to touch it will be shocked and stunned for a short time. In this form, the numbouse will pursue Pikmin to grab and eat them with their teeth. After a short time, it will lose its electricity, and attempt to flee to recharge its attack.

Considering the Bearded Amprat can generate electricity, use Yellow Pikmin to quickly take it out. Alternatively, a less effective method is using another Pikmin type, waiting for it to run out of electricity, and attacking it when it flees.

Louie's notes

This reminds me of the giant dog I found last time we went to this planet. I hope I can find another like it.

Overlord’s insight

The Bearded Amprat comes from a species of numbouses that can create static electricity throughout the silk of its fur, which can easily conduct electricity. It seems to display a more hostile behavior when it does this, probably to scare away attackers from its territory. Despite this, this rodent is quite timid and can be easily scared away just by chasing it if its fur is on cooldown. It seems to chew on wood and bark to use as a building material for its nest, so that explains the whole buckteeth thing. Wait... SO THAT’S WHAT'S BEEN CHEWING THROUGH MY PATIO!?

In Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers, Bearded Amprats are first encountered in the Windswept Wonderland, not unlike their previous primary habitat of the Distant Tundra in Pikmin 3. They are also functionally identical, but are much more social; they're often seen interacting with others of their kind.

Notes

Olimar's notes

When it feels threatened, this distant relative of the stakeshrews will rub the fur on its face to build up static electricity. Eventually, the levels of energy reach a point where its hairs stand on end, sparking with electric power that will taze and incapacitate those who cross its path. Unlike most animals on this planet, this is not primarily a predatory response but rather a territorial one. The numbouse family is notable for reintroducing mammals with conventional mammary glands in the ecosystem. Creatures like the blowhog instead feature milk patches to feed their young, but the numbouse and stakeshrew families breastfeed their young instead. Scientists are enthusiastic over this development in the natural world.

Louie's notes

The constant electric shocks this vermin brings upon itself makes its meat naturally astringent. Squirt fruit juice over its thighs to make it more palatable. Pan-sear them in olive oil with rosemary sprigs and garlic cloves to really bring it together.

Ship's comments

Fur like that looks more itchy than it does comfy. It might not seem like it, but rust patches are like rashes to me, and I can't reach them particularly easily either. This morsel must either have its fur matted down, or shaved ON LOCATION before salvage. Of course, Olimar wouldn't comply with either regulation because "the fur is the interesting bit"! To you, maybe...
