Family Dirigibug

The Careening Dirigibug is an unusual legless insectoid creature that slowly drifts through the air by utilizing colorful, balloon-like air sacs attached to the top of its body. When leaders or Pikmin approach, it will produce a bomb rock from its mouth and attempt to toss it down near them. The bomb rocks thrown by a Careening Dirigibug will damage, kill, or destroy anything in their range upon detonation.

Notes

Olimar's observations

This is truly a bizarre creature, but a rather troublesome one as well. The bombs they throw can easily wipe out an entire Pikmin army before you know it! It's best to keep a constant eye on these creatures if they are able to roam around freely. It's good to use Yellow Pikmin when we can since they go higher in the air. If we're lucky enough to have Orange Pikmin on hand, well, these things become a joke!

Cookin' with Louie

Pull off the balloonlike air sacs, mince the meaty abdomen, and shape it into small cakes. Pan-sear the cakes until crusted, but be careful not to overcook the delicate meat. When ready to serve, garnish the plate with the vibrant air sacs. Even the most discerning dinner guest will be dazzled by the colorful presentation.

Attacks Produces bomb rocks

The Careening Dirigibug is a returning enemy appearing in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature retains its appearance from Pikmin 2. The Dirigibug will float around until approached by Pikmin or a captain. It will then produce a single large bomb rock from its mouth. After floating to its destination, it will drop the bomb rock, rigging it to explode. If there are no Pikmin near when a bomb rock is made, the Dirigibug will drop it after thirty seconds. If attacked, the creature will burst its balloons in panic and fall to the ground. After a few seconds, it will get back up and immediately prime a bomb rock, slamming it onto the ground while shaking off Pikmin. This allows for a very narrow window for retreat. Winged Pikmin can be used to take on this creature in aerial combat. However, Iguana Pikmin can also take on the enemy from a safe distance with their ranged tongues. If a Dart Pikmin hits a Dirigibug’s balloon, it will pop, causing the creature to be slightly closer to the ground. The creature will fall to the ground after all balloons are popped. They can regenerate a balloon when popped every fifteen seconds.

The Careening Dirigibug is a defining member of the dirigibug family appearing in Pikmin: Gold Rush. It is a strange insect that flies using several air sacs resembling a bundle of balloons. It aimlessly drifts through the air with wind currents, moving at their speed. When a Pikmin or captain is in its range, it will form a bomb rock with its mouth and toss it at them, even from a distance away. The bomb rock will explode after a few seconds after it lands.

The Dirigibug hangs high in the air where only Yellow Pikmin or Winged Pikmin can reach it. Each of its balloons will pop one by one when attacked, causing the creature to lose altitude and thus allowing other Pikmin types to reach it. However, when it shakes Pikmin off, it will produce a bomb rock at a faster rate right after. Once all of its balloons have been popped, it will become helpless. Occasionally, Careening Dirigibugs will have some of their balloons already popped.
