Colossal Hollow is the fifth and penultimate area in Pikmin: Wide World, following Ancient Metalworks. As its name suggests, Colossal Hollow is an expansive cavern, complete with many stalactites, stalagmites, passageways, and tunnels. Most surfaces are of stone, but patches of dirt are present, especially in areas where fungi grow. The only water in the area is a clear lake on one side. If not for the numerous holes in the ceiling allowing sunlight to shine in through, Colossal Hollow would be completely dark, though visibility will always be at a minimum in some areas if there is no light source. There is often grass where the sun shines. For a change of scenery, an escape geyser leads out of the cavern and onto the grassy surface above, of which a decent portion can be explored, easily making Colossal Hollow the largest area; just don't fall in. To get back down safely, simply slide down a steep slope leading back in.
Because of the bulk of its explorable space, most of Colossal Hollow is cool, enough to impact leaders, Pikmin, and enemies except for where there is natural light, which is comfortably warm. The Pocket Radiator is the primary way to negate the cold. Outside, it is comfortably warm, though less so if overcast or there is rainfall. Strong winds often blow through the surface portion, however, which can make exploration difficult. Rain that falls in the area will come in through the holes in the ceiling of the interior portion, forming shallow, harmless puddles that last for the day and some days after.
The major boss of this area is the Titan Weaver Dweevil.
Plot
Landing in Colossal Hollow for the first time, the Dolphin Lander inadvertently scares off some White Pikmin defending themselves against some Mushroom Pikmin at the initial landing site. Seeing the Mushroom Pikmin mindlessly chasing after the fleeing White Pikmin, Olimar, Shacho, Marie, and Louie rush out of the Dolphin Lander and catch up to them. The leaders take action against the Mushroom Pikmin and unite with the handful of White Pikmin they were after.
The 4 Hocotatians do as they wish with the White Pikmin, be it exploring with them, leaving them in a safe place, or even cruelly killing them. But no matter their choice, they must confront the Titan Weaver Dweevil and its countless young. During its defeat, its death throes cause so much commotion that the White Onion it had captured falls from the ceiling. The night of the Titan Weaver Dweevil's defeat, Louie takes a moment to self-reflect on his time on PNF-404 while gazing out of the Dolphin Lander's window and sees what will be the final frontier: Sprawling Swamp.
