Family Splurchin (assumed)

The Dangling Splurchin is a splurchin found in the files of Hey! Pikmin. Its large, round body is red and covered in striped spikes, and attached to the Dangling Splurchin's body is a long, pink appendage surrounded by four spindly gray legs. Presumably, it would have served as an obstacle much like the Large Splurchin and would have hung from a ceiling, swinging around or constantly changing its distance from the ceiling to which it is attached.

The Dangling Splurchin appears in Pikmin: Wide World as a splurchin that hunts using surprise attacks. They hang upside-down from the ceiling of a cave, usually above portions of a sublevel that make navigation easier or are out-of-the-way, such as passageways that would serve as shortcuts back to the Lander Pod or lead to a treasure, fruit, or similar reward, and may sometimes be found above the entrances to those aforementioned passageways. However, they may be found somewhere above a larger chamber. No matter where they are found, Dangling Splurchins are always somewhere they may be easily bypassed or avoided, although objects past it may not be recoverable, at least easily, unless another route is available. A Dangling Splurchin may initially only be seen using the HocoPad's camera functionality until the creature reveals itself by suddenly dropping down to ambush Pikmin and leaders that near its hiding spot, skewering any directly under it at the time. Afterward, it will sway back and forth like a pendulum, often perpendicular but sometimes parallel to walls it is between, blocking any progression being made by Pikmin or leaders. A Dangling Splurchin will skewer any Pikmin and harm any leaders it swings into, also skewering or harming those thrown at or forced into it. Skewered Pikmin may be freed by whistling them and will perish if not whistled in time. When left alone, a Dangling Splurchin will pull itself up back to the ceiling it is attached to in preparation for another ambush.

Dangling Splurchins resemble most other members of the splurchin family, being spherical creatures covered completely in spikes. They are crimson in color and have spikes each featuring a thick, purple stripe, and on the underside of a Dangling Splurchin are four spindly gray appendages they use to firmly affix themselves to ceilings.

Because they serve more as obstacles rather than enemies, Dangling Splurchins must be killed in rather unconventional ways. Pikmin, no matter the type, are ineffective against them, as are punches delivered by leaders. Even Rock Pikmin throws and Purple Pikmin pounds have no effect on a Dangling Splurchin. Although Rock Pikmin can not be skewered by a Dangling Splurchin, any that are thrown at one merely knock it back slightly upon impact. Purple Pikmin are unable to rip a Dangling Splurchin's appendages from the ceiling by pounding on the creature's body. Yellow Pikmin and Winged Pikmin are able to reach a Dangling Splurchin's appendages, but they can not be attacked either. The only way to kill a Dangling Splurchin is by using any type of bomb rock. Should its blast power be at maximum, the explosion of any bomb rock type will result in the instant destruction of a Dangling Splurchin. An explosion with less blast power than the maximum will simply harm the creature. Upon its destruction, a Dangling Splurchin leaves nothing behind except HP Sparklium icon.png × 20, and its appendages, which dangle limply from the ceiling.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The dangling splurchin is an aggressive lifeform that openly attacks creatures passing below it despite it feeding only on microorganisms in the air. It uses four slender and extremely durable appendages located on its underside to hang upside-down from ceilings, where it drops down onto and swings into anything moving underneath. Presumably, it detects movement using vibrations using its appendages, but how it is able to reach a ceiling in the first place is unknown. What makes the creature even more dangerous is that it has evolved to live outside of water, its native environment.

Shacho's notes

If this creature doesn't remind me of Dorris, I don't know what does. It itself is much like the sudden, stinging insults she throws at me out of nowhere.

Marie's notes

This creature and the entire family it is part of does not have a brain. It is literally a ball of nerves! That, and its needlessly hostile behaviors, would not make it a good pet.

Louie's notes

Cut through its seemingly-impenetrable shell, careful to avoid injuring yourself on its spikes, to reach its delectable flesh. Best served steamed, and is flavorful on its own.

Dolphin Lander's notes

I'm not sure what to think of this thing, but most of the notes on this creature written by my crew highlight its unnecessary hostility, which I fully agree with.
