Gameplay aspect

Darkness is the absence of light in a particular location. Dark locations can be illuminated through light sources such as natural light or leaders' beacons. However, some darkness, referred to as extreme darkness, is not cleared so easily, reducing vision more than ordinary darkness. Pikmin that are alone in the dark for too long may begin to panic.

Effects Makes Pikmin afraid to pass through

Darkness is a new gameplay element in Pikmin 2... Again?. While dark places such as caves already exist, some places are so dark that it is impossible to pass through safely, acting as obstacles, and any Pikmin that a leader tries to make to pass through will immediately scramble away out of the dark, afraid. Darkness can be removed with Common Glowcaps and its spore variant, as well as with lamps. Despite their luminescence, Glow Pikmin will also refuse to pass through extreme darkness. On some alternate sublevels, darkness hides symbols that are needed for a code, requiring the use of Glow Pikmin to proceed. Despite technically being able to hide in the shadows, Lichen Pikmin also refuse to pass through extreme darkness.
