Template:Taxa The Emperor Bulblax is the second-largest known species of the Grub-dog family right after the Empress Bulblax. The Emperor Bulblax is different than most members of the Grub-dog family as it has a sludgy, melted appearance, smaller eyes, and a more flexible tongue. Moss grows upon its thick hide, giving its body a greenish color and serving as camouflage. Older Emperor Bulblaxes bear tall mushrooms and fern-like stems on their hump. Sometimes, what appear to be stones are also partially embedded in its back. These beasts usually hide in the ground to ambush prey, catching them with its long, sticky tongue. Its soft face is its only weak point to attack, but since it doesn't discriminate much when eating things, it can be led to swallow something a bit less tasteful than Pikmin, such as bomb-rocks.

Larger Emperor Bulblaxes lie buried almost entirely in the ground, visible only by the mossy growth on their backs protruding from the ground. When approached, the Bulblax will rear up and roar, knocking leaders and the Pikmin back, and will then proceed to attack by licking Pikmin into its mouth with a large purple tongue. If Pikmin are latched onto it or located under it, it will jump to shake off any Pikmin on it, and crush any Pikmin underneath. Once it has been attacked enough, it will add a new attack to its arsenal: jumping high up into the air, and eventually dropping onto its attackers. Its salivation is the only indicator of which attack it will use: if it's drooling, it will soon attack by using its tongue, gobbling up any Pikmin in front of it. The tongue is large and has no limit on the number of deaths it can cause. A jump can be foreseen by its eyes widening just before it hops. Once defeated, the Emperor Bulblax will writhe around while drooling and appear to be sucked underground, leaving behind whatever treasures it had ingested. If it doesn't have any treasures, it leaves behind five randomly-colored 5-pellets.

Smaller Emperor Bulblaxes are much weaker and lie buried with only their eyes exposed as a form of camouflage, but emerge in the same manner. The hide is not very mossy, but the backside of the beast is still green and slimy, as well as invulnerable. They still eat bomb-rocks and can be coaxed into doing so. Younger Emperor Bulblaxes cannot perform the massive leaps older ones can; instead, they roar when they are close to death. It will make other nearby Emperor Bulblaxes join the fight and drag Mitites out of the ground, which will scare the Pikmin into a frenzy. A younger Emperor Bulblax can only eat a maximum of nine Pikmin at a time. When it dies, the Emperor Bulblax will spin around while roaring, whipping gobs of saliva everywhere until it collapses and can be carried.

Emperor Bulblaxes have displayed the ability to summon more than just Mitites and fellow Emperors; they can also summon other enemies such as Crumbugs and Sparrowheads as well if need be. Emperor Bulblaxes can also eat small enemies whilst engaging Pikmin or leaders, but not purposefully.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"The largest member of the grub-dog family is normally found buried in the ground, with only the stalks of its eyes exposed. This camouflage allows the predator to surprise smaller creatures and use its long, adhesive tongue to capture prey. The thick hide and angular hump give the organism a distinct rocklike quality. During the rainy season, moss grows freely on its hump, making it nearly impossible to distinguish this lethal predator from a stone."

Louie's notes

"To prep the tongue for cooking, marinate in olive oil and chop into cubes. Stir in a pot with carrots, potatoes, and chives, cover, and simmer over low heat for several hours. Accompany this mouthwatering, rustic stew with a hearty roll."

In The Story Serial

An Emperor Bulblax has appeared in the story serial on the main page of Pikmin Fanon. It was apparently the same Emperor Bulblax that swallowed the final ship part, the Secret Safe. It claimed it had been killed, a seeming paradox since it should not be alive to tell if it was killed. An explanation has not yet been given.

Notably, the Emperor Bulblax was called the "Ancient One". It is unknown if this is its real name or just a title given to it by The Intelligence.

Interestingly, the Emperor Bulblax smelled Sagittarius and mistook him for Olimar. Sagittarius is Olimar's son, which is likely the reason behind the mistake.

The Emperor Bulblax is a boss that appears in Pikmin Eco, the main boss of the Bulblax Treetops dungeon of Bounty Canopy. It is exceptionally larger than any other Bulborb species in the game. It and the Hex-at-Legs are the only bosses that the Hoverpack is required to fight against.

Strategy

Like in previous games, it buries itself underground when first found, only its eyestalks visible. It will remain inactive until the player gets close or throws a Pikmin close enough to it, which then it will burst out of the ground to attack. Like previous games, its main attack is launching its large tongue out to slurp up unsuspecting Pikmin, but also after shaking off some Pikmin, it will jump into the air and slam onto the ground. This attack will make Pikmin launch back, but will also paralyze the player for a short bit, also dealing slight damage.

It has a very hard hide, so you're only able to attack it from the front. Also, the player will need to use the Hoverpack in order to stay off the ground whenever it slams into the ground to avoid damage.

Notes

  • The Emperor Bulblax is the largest known male species of the Grub-Dog family, only smaller than the Empress Bulblax. It's intriguing how this species tends to grow much larger when growing above ground whereas the size severely decreases for those who live underground. This has been classified as "environmentally effective growth", as smaller subspecies are better fitted to live underground than larger ones, who themselves are more durable due to competition for food. It buries itself out of sight and only attacks once a prey items gets close.

Pikspore

Template:PS Emperor Bulblaxes are just as big as the one in Pikmin 1 but slightly weaker yet are still tough bosses. One is fought in the Jungle Tunnel, and another later in Challenger's Cavern, and a final one in Spectral Garden in the Wasteland area.

Pikmin Chronicles

Main article: Pikmin Chronicles

In Pikmin Chronicles, an Emperor Bulblax serves as the first boss, appearing towards the end of Chapter 1. It is found buried in the ground on the last sublevel of the cave, with both its eyes and moss-covered back exposed. The Pikmin walk up to it, unaware of what it is until it is too late. At first, it is too strong to kill and the player must quickly escape to the surface before it eats them. Once at the surface, the ground shakes and a loud roar is heard. A few seconds later, the upset Emperor Bulblax bursts through the ground and terrorizes the landing site, which is where the boss battle takes place, It is about the same size as the one in Pikmin 1, and is killed the same way. After it is killed, its body is taken away and the player realizes that the hole the Emperor Bulblax created when it busted through the ground has opened up a new path...
