The Fiery Blowhog is a land-based blowhog that, as its name would imply, expels fire from its red-tipped trunk. Fiery Blowhogs typically wander around a very small zone aimlessly, always keeping within their territory. Once a blowhog has detected the presence of a leader or Pikmin, it will rotate to face them before spewing out a stream of fire. Although the Fiery Blowhog waits for an opportune moment to begin exhaling, it must inhale first, which creates a short delay before firing in which the attack may be avoided. From the moment the creature begins inhaling until it ceases spitting fire, it will not rotate or move, meaning the spray of fire will not follow leaders or Pikmin running away. Blowing the whistle within the area of the blowhog's attack will ensure that any Pikmin caught in the flames will instantly be extinguished. If the blowhog is under attack and not currently exhaling, it will buck itself forward and immediately shoot flames in the direction it was facing, though it must still inhale first. This bucking motion occurs regardless of whether the Blowhog is being attacked by Pikmin clinging to its body or not.

In Hey! Pikmin, a massive Fiery Blowhog serves as a boss and can expel jets of fire, and a series of fireballs. Additionally, a younger variant of the Fiery Blowhog, the Fiery Blowlet is introduced.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This creature expels a volatile phosphorus compound from its snout that combusts upon contact with air. This fire-breathing ability is dependent upon the air-to-fuel ratio at its mouth, catalyst reaction within the expelled compound, and purification of the compound. Thus it is highly unlikely such a complex process could cause the spontaneous explosion of a fallen blowhog. (This process is also perhaps to avoid the risk of spontaneous combustion in the belly of a live specimen.) However, one should still treat a fiery blowhog with great care, even after its life functions have ceased.

Louie's notes

Roast this flavorful beast for several hours, letting it stew in its succulent juices. Don't worry about overcooking this beast...it's scorch-proof.

Alph's comments

Structural flaw: inhaling period. I notice that it needs a moment to inhale something from the planet's atmosphere before exhaling fire. Its internals must be remarkable to stand up to the flames it produces. (Though of course, a Red Pikmin's externals can withstand the same heat.) If we could reproduce the process, it could be a great, renewable source of rocket fuel for our ship's engines!

Brittany's comments

I thought they'd be my favorite fauna. The idea of running into one in a frigid field or after getting soaked was nice. But it turns out they don't have a setting on those snouts below "roasted alive." Scratch another brilliant idea.

Charlie's comments

Be careful, or this one'll cook your goose. I don't know whether that's a nose or a mouth shooting those flames, and I don't care. What's important is that me and my troops are long gone when the fire hits.

The Fiery Blowhog is a species of Blowhog returning in Pikmin Eco, alongside the Watery Blowhog. Unlike its watery relative, this blowhog is more commonly found underground, in caves, rather than on the surface. The behavior of the Fiery Blowhog mirrors that in other previous games but with one extra feature: it will buck off Pikmin and shoot fire at them like normal, but if more than ten are on at a time it will buck more wildly and gallop around to make them get off of it. This is more frantic bucking and spreads out Pikmin much more widely. This trait is also shared with the Watery Blowhog.

Notes

In-game entry

This species of blowhog has become increasingly rare to find in modern times due to the increasing population of watery blowhogs. A possible explanation is the lack of complication it needs to breathe fire as opposed to shooting water. Some believe the warmer climate change might have something to do with it too. Regardless of the reasons, this species is currently endangered.

Notes

Brittany's notes

The fiery blowhog possesses a highly-sealed sac filled with a chemical that combusts when exposed to air. It will expel this liquid from its nozzle-mouth to reduce its prey to ashes, a form that it can consume.

Olimar's notes

A classic trick to defeating these enemies is to throw a few pikmin onto it to goad it into bucking and then charging in with the rest of your force. Alternatively, you can throw a couple of red pikmin on it and walk away, as breathing fire is its only attack, though watch for nearby hazards.

Louie's notes

Bacon is all the rage nowadays! The fireproof meat means it will never overcook, ensuring a tasty crunch that beats any Hocotate pig.

The Fiery Blowhog is a rare blowhog in Pikmin: Spider Attack. The Fiery Blowhog only appears twice in Birch Forest and once in Lava Base, and can't be found anywhere else in the Story Mode areas. The Fiery Blowhog is a much more common enemy in Challenge Mode. It appears four times in Blowhog Base, and three more times in Flaming Chamber. Swarm it with Red Pikmin, which are good to use since they are resistant to fire, and swarm it again after it bucks Pikmin off of itself.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The genetic divide in the blowhog family is rather strange, with air-based blowhogs varying in appearance, and land-based blowhogs of basically the same appearance. Now, what would happen if a super fiery blowhog gained the ability to fly?
