Frigid Tundra is the third area in Pikmin: Wide World, discovered after Arid Oasis. It is the smallest of the 5 areas, but there is still enough space for 3 landing sites. Frigid Tundra is a snowy plain that is dotted with frozen water and ice chunks but also has some visible grass protruding from the snow at some parts. Below where the snow is thinnest is visible dirt and stone, or ice formed on the surface of water bodies that are either fully or partially frozen. It is a mostly open-air environment but does have a subterranean section where some of the area's native wildlife take shelter for warmth.

True to its name, Frigid Tundra has a bitter coldness only intensified by any snowfall and wind in the area. The cold affects all leaders and Pikmin, significantly slowing them and even harming leaders and freezing Pikmin if temperatures dip low enough, but most enemies are unaffected, or at least suffer minimal effects, due to being adapted to the cold. The most effective way to negate the effects of the area's coldness is for leaders to equip the Pocket Radiator, which also provides warmth to Pikmin and improves how quickly both of them recover from cold. Seeking refuge in the subterranean portion is an effective way to get out of the cold, as wind and snow rarely blow in and it is warmer than the outside.

The major boss of Frigid Tundra is the Brumal Arcticlops.

Plot

See: Pikmin: Wide World's story

After reflecting on PNF-404's rapid evolution one night and noticing Frigid Tundra, Captain Olimar lands the Dolphin Lander in the area. He and Shacho exit the Lander and explore with their two Pikmin types, and soon they stumble upon a cave they discover Red Pikmin and, with great relief, their Onion in. After leaving, Olimar and Shacho decide to tackle what they can in the area with their newfound Red Pikmin until sunset. The day after having found Red Pikmin, Shacho reflects on recent events and notices a silhouette on the horizon that reminds him of Hocotate Freight, Olimar naming it Ancient Metalworks.

It isn't very long until Olimar and Shacho return to Frigid Tundra, now with Marie in tow. The night after visiting Marie's crash site in Ancient Metalworks, Olimar dreams about Louie. Having a strong suspicion about Frigid Tundra, he insists on investigating and will not stop until he is satisfied. Olimar, Shacho, and Marie explore Frigid Tundra further than ever before, ultimately encountering and defeating the Brumal Arcticlops. Before the continentia dies, it spits up, of all things, Louie, much to everyone's surprise. With the crew back together, plus one extra, nothing can stand in their way, especially with the Pikmin at their side and with more to find.
