Template:Taxa Hairy Bulborbs are similar in appearance to Red Bulborbs, but have a white backside with blue spots and a lot of fluffy, white fur. As the creature's health begins to fall, so does its hair, revealing its blue spots, making it more closely resemble its breadbug mimic, though larger in size. Hairy Bulborbs are similar in most respects to other mature bulborbs, but tend to live in colder environments. They have less health and are slightly more aggressive than the Red Bulborb, but can be defeated using similar techniques. The Whiptongue Bulborb is very similar in coloration.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"This subspecies of grub-dog has a thick coat of soft white fur that obscures its abdominal markings. The fur also warms its vital organs, making this species well adapted to colder climates. However, its hair follicles are surprisingly frail, which can result in immediate hair loss if the creature is surprised."

Louie's notes

"Remove all of the bulborb's hair, wrap the beast in foil along with a halved lemon, and place it directly on the grill. The foil should protect the carcass from scorching, and the lemon will give the meat an elegant hint of citrus."

In Pikmin V, the Hairy Bulborb's behavior is significantly altered to make it a tougher enemy, alongside an increase to its health. It is now awake during the day and wanders around the area where it spawns, akin to the Whiptongue Bulborb. Additionally, when its hair falls off at half health, all Pikmin attached to its backside fall off with it, even if they are Clawed Pikmin.

Notes

Brittany's notes

"Recently, the hairy bulborb has adopted a cathemeral activity cycle over the nocturnal bulborb standard. It is not uncommon for nocturnal animals to turn diurnal in periods of extended cold or famine, but researchers haven't noticed extensive casualties from these conditions in the species. My theory is that it is warier of such changes and has adopted this intermediary lifestyle to prepare."

Olimar's notes

"The safest approach is to wait for its vulnerable back to be turned toward you. For the more daring, you can coax it into biting and missing, giving you some time to circle to its backside. Don't throw all of your Pikmin at once, as its hair falls off when weakened and takes any Pikmin with it."

Louie's notes

"Unfortunately, the quality of the meat is directly proportional to the amount of hair you must remove. Barbers do not react well to bringing one of these into their shops."

Hairy Bulborbs return in Pikmin: Attack of the Breadbugs. Hairy Bulborbs generally are found wandering in both the Arctic Territory and Arctic Chamber. Only one Hairy Bulborb can be found in the Arctic Chamber, guarding the Frozen Legend Shard. Unlike in Pikmin 2, Hairy Buborbs lose more fur the more they are injured; by the time they are defeated, Hairy Bulborbs will have lost all of their fur. Pikmin may be thrown onto the hair of a Hairy Bulborb to have more of a grip and an advantage of defeating one. However, this also means that the Hairy Bulborb becomes more aggressive and agitated the further its health is depleted. Hairy Bulborbs constantly patrol the area and may stop to look at the ground for a few moments just as dwarf bulborbs do. Captain Olimar cannot assist in carrying the corpses of Hairy Bulborbs due to their large size.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"This bulborb has rapidly growing hair follicles. When it loses its hair, it usually regenerates in a couple of hours, granted that the bulborb has enough nutrients to do so."

Hairy Bulborbs appear in Pikmin: Return with graphical changes such as its hairs looking silky: every individual Hairy Bulborb has different hues of brown on its face and blue on its back. Hairy Bulborbs in this game behave and look like bulborbs in Pikmin 3. If Pikmin are thrown onto its eyes, it, like any other grub-dog, will flinch and drop any Pikmin in its mouth. It will lose its hair the more it is damaged. Its hair provides some defense, while its face takes normal damage. A bomb rock will take half of its health and will make all of its hairs fall off. If a Hairy Bulborb is caught in the rain, its hairs will appear soaked, and it will not be asleep, making this enemy quite dangerous in the rain.

Attacks Eats Pikmin

Hairy Bulborbs are rarer grub-dogs in Pikmin: Return to the Distant Planet, only appearing in snow-covered areas and migrating as soon as the snowing season is over. Their whole body is white save for a brown spot on its nose and the light blue spots on its back. It also has ice-blue eyes and a back covered in fluffy white fur. Hairy Bulborbs are only encountered in areas where it's snowing, migrating from one area to the other as the seasons change. Due to this, these creatures never hibernate and are constantly on the move, following the changing seasons so as to stay in a perpetual winter. They can be found sleeping during the day, however, once they've reached their destinations. They have a much shorter detection range compared to other grub-dogs, requiring it being touched for it to wake up. They also regenerate health, unlike other grub-dogs, and with it, regenerate hair shaken off during combat. These peculiar grub-dogs prefer bright areas rather than caves, and as such, will never be encountered in caves or areas with darker backgrounds.

Swarming is an effective strategy, however, note that its hairy back will protect it from much more damage than normal, and the falling hairs will cause your Pikmin to be shaken off significantly further than normal. Once its fragile hairs have been shaken off, however, its back will be exposed and take more damage than normal. Throwing Pikmin onto its eyes is another very effective strategy, as the recoil it causes will make the beast shake off its protective hairs, exposing its weak back to further attacks. Take note that, if left alone, a Hairy Bulborb will regenerate its health and its hair completely. In a pinch, feeding it a bomb rock will kill it immediately.

Attacks Eats Pikmin

Hairy Bulborbs are enemies in Pikmin: Treacherous Treasures. They are similar in appearance to Red Bulborbs but have a white backside with blue spots instead of a red backside with white spots. It also has lots of fluffy white fur that protects it against Rock Pikmin and other Pikmin, attacks to an extent.

Attacking the Hairy Bulborb is a bit different than attacking other bulborbs; its furry back dampens the damage it takes from Pikmin attacks. While attacking a Hairy Bulborb head-on, its eyes can be targeted to deal additional damage. Call back any Pikmin the creature shakes off of itself. The safest strategy is to attack the creature from behind, using Pikmin that can latch onto enemies. They'll do less damage but have a greater chance of surviving. Pikmin thrown onto the Hairy Bulborb's hairs will cling onto the hair, making them harder to shake off, however, they'll deal less damage than they would if they were attacking its bare skin.

Template:Infobox pww

The Hairy Bulborb appears in Pikmin: Wide World as a grub-dog that is exclusive to Frigid Tundra and its caves. Its dwarf counterpart, the Dwarf Hairy Bulborb, is often found huddled against it for warmth. Some Hairy Bulborbs are host to parasitic Pikmin, which results in the creation of Hairy Bulbmin. Hairy Bulborbs can be found sleeping on dry land, either alone or in small groups, and are sometimes accompanied by Dwarf Hairy Bulborbs. They will awaken if they are touched, harmed, or hear a sound loud enough to rouse them from their sleep. Brushing against a Hairy Bulborb's fur will cause its back to quiver, and continuing to touch its fur will awaken the creature. While awake, a Hairy Bulborb will pursue any Pikmin or leaders it detects in its territory. Should they flee far enough away, a Hairy Bulborb will seek a spot near its original resting position and fall asleep there. Hairy Bulborbs that are sleeping outside often have snow collecting on their fur and bodies, and when they shake Pikmin off, the snowflakes on them are inadvertently scattered around, which can chill nearby Pikmin and leaders.

Hairy Bulborbs are the size and shape of most other bulborbs, but have different skin pigmentation and have hair growing from their back, which gives the creatures their name. Their face and backside are primarily white, but they have brown coloration on their snout, bottom lip, eyestalks, lower legs, and feet. The spots on their rump are light blue, but can only be seen if their silky, white hair is removed. Their eyes are light blue with white sclerae. Hairy Bulborbs have a pair of white fangs and have a single white claw at the end of each of their four toes.

Battles against Hairy Bulborbs aren't much different than those against most other bulborbs. Although a Hairy Bulborb's face and eyes are always completely vulnerable, its back is covered by a thick layer of fur, which provides it with minor protection from predators. Most attacks directed at its backside, such as hits from Pikmin, Rock Pikmin throws, Purple Pikmin pounds, and punches from leaders, will have their damage reduced unless the creature's hair is removed. Pikmin that are thrown onto a Hairy Bulborb's backside or latch onto it themselves will begin to rip out the creature's hair, similar to what is done to a Shaggy Long Legs. Pikmin that are hanging onto a Hairy Bulborb's fur have less of a chance of being shaken off, but they will fall to the ground after yanking out a patch of hair. This does not harm the Hairy Bulborb, but it does expose patches of its skin and allow it to be attacked from behind unhindered. Rocks and bomb rocks, as well as any bomb rock variant, will still inflict normal damage, however. Like most bulborbs, the eyes of a Hairy Bulborb can have Pikmin thrown at them to inflict damage to the creature, make it flinch, and cause it to spit out any Pikmin in its mouth. Any leaders it bites down on will be chewed up, and then spat out alongside any Pikmin in its mouth at the time. Upon death, a Hairy Bulborb will yield HP Sparklium icon.png × 5. It will retain any hair it had left before its death. Aboveground, their remains can be taken to either the Dolphin Lander to receive P3 Poko icon.png × 7 or the Master Onion to gain ten Pikmin seeds. Underground, they can be carried to the Lander Pod to either gain P3 Poko icon.png × 7 or be stored for later to gain ten Pikmin seeds of choice from the Master Onion, but only if the cave is exited using an escape geyser.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"Thriving in arctic environments, this creature has a thick coat of fur on its backside that provides it with an ample amount of warmth. Its habitat sets it apart from other grub-dogs, as no other would stand against such cold temperatures. Their hair follicles do not seem as frail as they once were in a previous voyage I took to PNF-404, but its hairs can be freely ripped out of its body without causing it pain."

Shacho's notes

"Oh, how warm and soft this creature's fur is! I could fall asleep easily laying in a bed stuffed with it. Making winter clothes out of it doesn't seem like a bad idea, either... I'll have to think about this more when I have a little downtime."

Marie's notes

"On a cold winter night, there's nothing more I'd want than to snuggle up close to a hairy bulborb for warmth. They make for well-behaved, obedient pets, but they shed hair like nobody's business! I've had to pluck more of their hairs off of myself than I could count just writing this!"

Louie's notes

"Remove every hair from its body and discard them. Extract its heart, place it in a roasting pan, and cook it in an oven until done. Enjoy!"

Dolphin Lander's notes

"I think my favorite part of these charming creatures, besides their facial markings, are their captivating blue eyes. Their gaze is... poetic. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the right words to describe it."
