The Plasm Wraith is a virtually featureless, vaguely humanoid being made entirely out of a cellular protoplasmic mass, allowing it to split different parts of its body off to create other semi-independent entities or even change shapes. Its alternate, Goolix-like form is the Mysterious Life-Form, in which it relentlessly pursues the leader guiding the Pikmin carrying Captain Olimar in the Formidable Oak, and can quickly reach distant targets by oozing over obstacles in its path. It holds any curiosities, namely Olimar, it finds captive with what appears to be curiosity rather than maliciousness and jealously lashes out at anything displaying an interest in them.

As the Mysterious Life-Form, the Plasm Wraith can not be destroyed, only fled from, although it can be temporarily incapacitated. It simply envelops Pikmin and leaders that touch it while it is translucent, but can be attacked while it is opaque, which only occurs once it absorbs Captain Olimar and attempts to flee with him. Any Pikmin inside of the Mysterious Life-Form when it becomes opaque will be simultaneously killed, but they can be freed before then by continuously whistling them. When attacked, the Mysterious Life-Form may eject an elemental plasm, and when critically injured, slowly revives by reforming its body.

Once Olimar is brought outside, the Plasm Wraith reverts to its primary form, pulls Olimar into its core, and begins openly attacking its aggressors. It will actively attack Pikmin but prefers to target the leaders over them, and attacks those close by skewering them with a rapid needle-arm attack. If any Pikmin aside from Rock Pikmin are in the range of this attack, they will be skewered and eaten. Attacking the Plasm Wraith at this point will cause small bits of plasm to fall off of it, depleting its health. However, Pikmin must then attack the puddles of plasm on the ground to destroy them, or the Plasm Wraith will simply reabsorb the puddles and recover health. To shake Pikmin off of itself, the Plasm Wraith twists its body and then releases it, causing additional plasm to fly off of its body. The Plasm Wraith can also become temporarily airborne, and if it is hit with enough Pikmin, it will fall, losing even more plasm when it hits the ground. As it loses plasm, it decreases in size. After one-quarter of its health is depleted, the Plasm Wraith will attack by sacrificing plasm to spew elemental plasms, and rapidly spit out three at a time when its health reaches critical levels.

Even after its defeat, when it is reduced to a small puddle of plasm, the Plasm Wraith is shown to be able to quickly return to full size.

The Plasm Wraith is a returning boss in Pikmin 2... Again?, but not as a final boss. The Plasm Wraith is a featureless, humanoid creature made out of a golden protoplasm, and its body shape is pretty odd compared to other supernatural creatures such as the Waterwraith and Mockwraith. The Plasm wraith has two stubby arms that it can extend into a sharp point to impale Pikmin with, a hole in its face that acts as its mouth, and two legs on the bottom of its shapely body. In its transparent form, its golden Rubik's Cube-like core is visible.

The Plasm Wraith first appears in the Unknown Cavern. At first, it resembles a goolix-like blob. It appears at the start of the cave as a rain of plasm droplets that fall from the ceiling and then form into the Plasm Wraith. In this form, the Plasm Wraith will chase the closest leader, and in its transparent form, any Pikmin caught will be absorbed into its body. After some seconds, the Plasm Wraith will turn opaque, digesting and killing all Pikmin trapped in its body. While it is opaque, the Plasm Wraith can be attacked, and once enough damage is dealt, it'll burst apart. During this time, it is harmless but also can not be attacked, and will regenerate after some time has passed to resume its hunt.

On the final sublevel, the Plasm Wraith appears again, but this time it will suddenly change into its true form, starting the fight. The Plasm Wraith initially walks about its arena, alternating between being transparent and opaque. While opaque, the Plasm Wraith can use its arms to repeatedly stab the ground in front of it, attempting to hit Pikmin that get close to it, and any Pikmin caught will be impaled and eaten. While transparent, the Plasm Wraith will absorb any Pikmin that hits it, but a Purple Pikmin's shockwave will free 5 of them. After some seconds, the Plasm Wraith will turn opaque, eating any Pikmin inside it. Also while transparent, the Plasm Wraith may split into several plasms that travel in a straight line each at different elevations until hitting a wall, an attack inspired by the Yellow Devil's from the Mega Man series. After they all collide with a wall, the plasms will morph back into the Plasm Wraith, and the Plasm Wraith will turn opaque even if it didn't catch any Pikmin. Much like its Goolix-like form, the Plasm Wraith can only be attacked while it is opaque. Doing so will cause globs of plasm to fall off of it and to the ground, and if not attacked and destroyed, the Plasm Wraith will eventually pull any loose plasm back into its body, recovering some lost health in the process. Upon defeat, the Plasm Wraith will spit out the Genius' Cube and its core before collapsing and disappearing, granting the "..." achievement. Carrying the core, which is worth quite a bit of Pokos compared to most boss' spoils, to the Research Pod will grant the the "So shiny! But is that really gold?" achievement.

The Plasm Wraith later appears again in the Final Challenge, where it is much larger with more health, and its arena has many Goolins. Its chase form is faster both in speed and while regenerating.

The Plasm Wraith also appears in Boss Rush V in the Timed Mode, the only boss rush it appears in.

In Pikmin E, the Plasm Wraith is much weaker and easier to fight than its Pikmin 3 incarnation, and serves as a miniboss. It also appears as the Mysterious Life-Form, which behaves the same as its original incarnation.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Never, never has anything in my life caused me so much psychological damage. The others are convinced it was innocent. Are they mad? The moment I get any free time, I'm going to see a therapist.

Louie's cookbook

The last time I tried eating one of these, I almost died. Do you expect me to do it again?

Eli's notes

Louie said eating it is deadly, I don't see why though, it's delicious!

Attacks Skewers and eats Pikmin

In Pikmin Ultimate, it acts as a mini-boss of the cave, Ghoul's Resting Place. It is substantially easier than in Pikmin 3, as it has fewer hit points and has lost its elemental plasm attacks. However, its stabbing attack is longer and it is faster than the original. It can also become the Mysterious Life-Form for a brief moment. Other than speed, the more dangerous stabbing attack, and the ability to transform, the fight isn't much different.

The Plasm Wraith is a returning supernatura appearing in Pikmin: Wide World as the major boss of Ancient Metalworks, where the creature's presence is subtly hinted at until formally revealed. Specifically, various organic, but not mechanical, enemies in Ancient Metalworks will collapse into plasm upon defeat, which can then be destroyed. The first time this happens, Captain Olimar fights off an impending anxiety attack, knowing all too well what the anomaly means, and alerts Shacho, Marie, and Louie of its significance. The Plasm Wraith is revealed to be the same one that had so obsessively held Olimar hostage during the events of Pikmin 3.

On the night of the defeat of the Robust Bulbot on the surface, Olimar is abducted by the Plasm Wraith, in the form of the Plasm Goolix, before the Dolphin Lander can beam him up, and escapes to its lair with Olimar trapped helplessly inside. In fear of the approaching nocturnal predators, the three other leaders already in the Lander, followed by the Master Onion, take off into the atmosphere and remain there until sunrise. During the cutscene in which Olimar is abducted, the Plasm Wraith's motif is heard quietly in the "end of the day" theme starting from when the creature reveals itself and gradually grows louder as it approaches Olimar. Its climax, when it engulfs Olimar, consists of the "end of the day" theme faltering under the overwhelming intensity of the same musical theme that plays when the Mysterious Life-Form is dangerously close to Olimar in Pikmin 3, all before the screen cuts to black. The following day, Shacho, Marie, and Louie hastily exit the Dolphin Lander and notice a trail of plasm blobs of various sizes seeming to lead somewhere. When approached, some of the blobs may suddenly take the form of organic enemies native to the area, with larger, more powerful enemies forming as the trail is followed. The size of the enemy or how many of them appear, if any at all, is based on how much plasm the puddle consists of. The three leaders, with their Pikmin, follow the trail until they wind up at a now-demolished cinderblock gate, which they pass through to enter the Plasm Wraith's Lair.

The Plasm Wraith is a large, vaguely humanoid figure comprised entirely of plasm, a gold-colored fluid substance with which the creature can assume its alternate form, among many other uses. It has a curvy build, a hole for a face, and two misshapen stubby arms on either side of its head that it can project into needles. As for the Plasm Goolix, it is best described as two yellow blobs attached to one another. One blob is larger than the other and contains the Plasm Wraith's golden cuboid core. The Plasm Wraith, in this simple form, can become translucent, adopting water-like properties until it makes itself opaque again.

Just before entering the Plasm Wraith's lair, Shacho, Marie, and Louie can witness the Plasm Wraith standing toward the back, gently cradling the unconscious Olimar in its arms and rocking him back and forth while gazing lovingly down upon him. However, when they intrude on its territory and it notices, the Plasm Wraith will quickly absorb Olimar into its core and proceed to roar angrily at them, initiating the fight. The Plasm Wraith attacks mainly by turning its stubby arms into sharp needles to skewer Pikmin and leaders with, eating the former and knocking away and heavily damaging the latter. Attacking the Plasm Wraith will cause plasm to fall off of it, decreasing its health, which the creature will eventually reabsorb, healing itself, if not destroyed. To shake off Pikmin, the Plasm Wraith will twist its body several times over like a corkscrew, then release, flinging its attackers off as well as some plasm. Bomb rocks are especially effective, as the explosions they create will blow off a sizeable portion of its body.

When it reaches three-fourths of its total health, it occasionally spits out a core and sacrifices plasm to create elemental plasms, which may be based on the hazards of fire, electricity, water, crushing, and, remarkably, poison. Specifically, they are: a bed of fire, the core resting on it; a spherical electrical field, the core suspended high above the ground; a ball of water, the core suspended in the center; a tumbling crystalline cube, the core also suspended in the middle; and lastly, a large cloud of poison, the core bouncing into the air in random directions but short distances and then landing on the ground. When destroyed, an elemental plasm will disintegrate into a large pool of plasm, though this will also occur if left intact for long enough, usually just before the Plasm Wraith inhales any loose plasm. The poison plasm is the most dangerous as White Pikmin have not yet been discovered at the time of the encounter, but an explosion will destroy it instantly. When its health reaches one-third, the Plasm Wraith will begin spitting up to three elemental plasms at a time, in rapid succession.

Throughout the battle, the Plasm Wraith will periodically transform into the Plasm Goolix and back again, either as time passes or it is hurt. In this form, it is generally opaque, and therefore solid enough for Pikmin to attack, but will bury Pikmin that wind up under it. However, it will regularly become translucent and watery, allowing it to engulf Pikmin it touches, whether it be by simply oozing over them, or if they are thrown at, charged at, or swarmed into it. Pikmin trapped inside of the Plasm Goolix will die immediately when it turns opaque but can be whistled continuously to free them before then. While translucent, the Plasm Goolix can not be harmed, only stunned. As well, the Plasm Goolix will reabsorb any loose plasm it moves over, no matter whether it is opaque or translucent. Because of its unpredictability and the difficulties it presents, attacking the Plasm Goolix is not recommended, but can be done to cause it to revert to its standard form earlier, thus saving time.

When defeated, the Plasm Wraith will collapse into a puddle of plasm, leaving behind Olimar and its core. Before collecting the spoils, the three leaders and their Pikmin destroy the remaining plasm to ensure that the Plasm Wraith will no longer be a threat to anyone or anything ever again. Olimar, who is still asleep, must be carried back to the Dolphin Lander and will awaken by the time the Dolphin Lander blasts off at sundown. If Olimar is not brought to the Lander within the day, his body will always have been carefully moved to the center of the Plasm Wraith's lair overnight, suggesting the Plasm Wraith may still be alive.

In ultra-spicy difficulty, the Plasm Wraith can eject elemental plasms that harness acid, bubbles, and even panic. Specifically, they are: an effervescent half-sphere that spreads out along the ground, the core on the ground; a massive bubble that slowly glides in the air in the direction of the Plasm Wraith's movements, the core gently bouncing about on the inside; and lastly, a chaotic monochromatic field that constantly spikes out in all directions and emits a startling screeching noise, the core bouncing wildly about on the ground. Additionally, elemental plasms continue to exert their hazard even after disintegrating. Any plasm that drops off the Plasm Wraith itself has a chance to merge together or outright form into small organic enemies native to Ancient Metalworks, much like the plasm on the way to the creature's lair. Any the Plasm Goolix oozes over will be absorbed back into its body.

Olimar's comments

PWW Captain Olimar icon.png Never has a monster caused me so much suffering and grief. It has taken a massive toll on my mental health, and I'm more than happy that it has been put to a permanent end. I know its behavior towards me was innocent, but it was obsessive and it wouldn't let me go. It wouldn't let me go anywhere, do anything, or interact with other lifeforms. As much as thinking of this abomination pains me, it is still a spectacle that I would like to study more sometime. Well, maybe not me, but somebody else.

Shacho's comments

PWW President icon.png Gold! It's made of liquid gold! I could bottle it all up and sell it all of Hocotate and rake in so many Pokos! The sales would make me the richest person on Hocotate! Whew, what a dream that is...

Marie's comments

PWW Marie icon.png This creature is definitely one of those pets that would practically own its owner! Judging by its obsession with Olimar, it seems like a very curious but obsessive creature. It also seems particularly lonely, as Olimar told me that it creates what he calls "plasm illusions", and they take the form and behaviors of creatures the plasm wraith has seen. So, that means the plasm wraith can make more pets! One of the best things about the plasm wraith is that it is so protective of its owner. It can also change its form, which I can see would cause some surprise.

Louie's comments

PWW Louie icon.png Inedible. Although its citrus scent is pleasant, consumption may lead to unforeseen consequences.

Dolphin Lander's comments

PWW Dolphin Lander icon.png Olimar really does not like this thing. I was so happy I could wake him up and hear how relieved he was that the plasm wraith was no more! At least, he hopes that an end has been put to it. He also wishes he could've witnessed its remains being destroyed. It seems a bit over-the-top, but... I suppose it's justified, considering his past with it... Even if the plasm wraith never wanted to hurt him.
