Pellet Posies are a species of plant that possesses a unique trait that allows them to crystallize their nectar into pellets, which are dropped when the plant is broken down by a Pikmin. Pikmin can be ordered to carry these back to their Onions, and they are the main way Pikmin propagate. In order to help grow newly-found Pikmin, both Pellet Posies and pellets that are always the color of that Pikmin type are found near the discovery site of each Onion.

The pellets themselves come in different sizes, with some examples being 1, 5, 10, and 20, and colors, each matching the colors of the Onions. These differences determine the number of Pikmin produced when the pellet is collected. Some Posies' pellets change color at regular intervals, in a similar way to Queen Candypop Buds; the color is fixed when the Pellet Posy is destroyed, making it possible to choose which to collect. The order that the color cycles is always the chronological order that the Pikmin are discovered.

After a Pellet Posy is taken down, it disappears, but returns the next day as a small stub, which grows over time. They take four minutes to grow to full height and generate a new pellet. Larger pellets need larger Pellet Posies, which in turn have more health. Pellets without a plant can be found within aboveground areas, usually as a drop from enemies, but may also be found underground.

Although the Pellet Posy is a plant rather than an enemy, it is still vulnerable to attacks and can be killed with ease by Pikmin or a leader. When hit, they make a squeaking sound. For an instant kill, throw Pikmin at the pellet, not the stem. There are exceptions to this quick knockout: Pellet Posies larger than size "1" will need to have Pikmin thrown on to it, so they can latch on and gradually detach it with attacks. However, Pikmin can knock down the pellets right away by throwing them from below. After this, whether they automatically return to a nearby leader or remain idle to pick up the pellet depends on the game.

Olimar's notes

"In the stem of the pellet posy, one can observe the muscle fiber unique to half-plant, half-animal species such as the Pikmin and candypop flowers, so the pellet posy is a species that can be considered a close relative. Although the ability to crystallize nectar is unique to a small group of the pellet weed family, the fact that these plants reach maturity so quickly and that their pellets contain such high concentrations of the natural nutrients in the soil explains why the Pikmin and so many of the other indigenous species are so reliant on these pellets for sustenance."

Louie's notes

"On the quest for the perfect hors d'oeuvre? Slow cook this plant in a wood-fire oven, but be careful to only serve the tender pellet."

There are 50-pellets in the game; there is a one-in-seventy-five chance that any 20-pellet Pellet Posy will be a 50-pellet Pellet Posy instead. When an Onion Seed is fully grown, there will be a new color for every Pellet Posy that corresponds to the color of the Onion. Also, a single one hundred pellet does exist, but is held by the diabolical Giga Peeking Pelletonium, which only appears at the Ancient Valley every twenty days, starting from day forty-one.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"These plants help Pikmin reproduce. What good they do to other creatures is unknown. I wonder how two large pellets could fit in an iridescent glint beetle at times, though. Or how the stalk can lift up a heavy pellet."

Ship's notes

"How these plants grow is just confusing. But the colors... Red... Yellow... Blue... Red... Yellow... Blue... Red... Yellow... Blue... Purple... White... Teal... Fuchsia... I think I'm getting sick... how... ERROR!"

Pellet Posies appear in The Summoning Garden near the landing site, The Spring of Serenity near the landing site, and on the bridge on sublevel nine of the Yellow Depths. It is not possible to collect any pellets from the pellet posies in the Yellow Depths.

Notes

Olimar's notes

"This species tends to crystallize some kind of nectar into a pellet. How it produces the nectar is yet unclear. Another anomaly that occurs is that it is able to form a "1" or a "5", without prior knowledge of Hocotatian arithmetic. Truly confounding!"
