Pikmin: Neo is the second entry in the Carbon timeline, being the sequel of Pikmin: Spark and prequel to Pikmin: Carbon. Unlike other games in the Pikmin franchise, this game focuses on open-world exploration and includes nighttime gameplay.

Plot

Five years after the event of Pikmin: Spark, a new planetary body has been located in Hocotate's solar system. This planet sent shockwaves throughout the scientific community because it appeared out of nowhere and from no discernable source of origin. The planet was dubbed Hoco-Minor due to being half the size of Hocotate while also sharing the same atmosphere. Among the people watching the news of this discovery is a now-aged Captain Olimar, whose family is in massive debt due to having to take out a massive loan to pay for his children's college fund. Deciding that he needs to pay off this debt, he leaves a letter on his desk, writing that he will be on one final trip. Meanwhile, Louie is being pursued by an angry mob for his new cookbook being linked to cases of fatal food poisoning. As a result, he wants to redeem himself by following Olimar on his journey to salvage any valuables they can find on the planet. However, as they enter Hoco-Minor's atmosphere, their ship breaks apart, leaving the two stranded on the strange planet. However, due to the planet having a breathable atmosphere, Olimar and Louie can survive indefinitely on the planet. As Louie wakes up in a humid swamp, he notices that he is separated from Olimar, but can see a strange red structure.
