Sprawling Swamp is the sixth and final area in Pikmin: Wide World, just after Colossal Hollow. It is a dreary marshland with plenty of vegetation, mostly tall reeds that restrict movement and impede vision, and little dry land, as some exposed land is soggy and there are so many liquid bodies in the environment. Wet ground slows leaders, Pikmin, and smaller enemies that tread through it. There is no pure water in Sprawling Swamp; rather, most water has acidic properties and no Pikmin can safely explore it, and the rest of the water is muddy and murky. Little sunlight can reach the land, rendering it dim throughout the day, and by sunset, the area is completely black. What appears to be the remains of a wooden shack are strewn about the environment, indicating the area is a once-populated southern bayou.

As if Sprawling Swamp's landscape wasn't harsh enough, the area's heat and humidity will take a toll on leaders without the Pocket Conditioner. All Pikmin except Red Pikmin, due to their heat resistance, and some enemies are also affected by the climate. Additionally, a persistent fog cloaks the area most days, further reducing visibility. Rain, accompanied by cloud cover, is frequent in Sprawling Swamp, reducing the area's temperature to a more comfortable level but further decreasing how much light there is and intensifying any fog that may be present. Heavier rain may also result in puddles of pure water, which linger for a few days. Wind rarely, if ever, blows through the area.

Sprawling Swamp has 2 major bosses: the Hydroe Host, and after it, the Winged Snagret. Hidden deep in the area is also the Quaggled Mireclops, which serves as a secret boss. This area also harbors the final boss, the Grimacing Cremblub, in one of its caves.

Plot

Preparing to land in Sprawling Swamp for the first time, Olimar, Shacho, Marie, and Louie are shocked to see countless quivering spiked teal tendrils reaching along the ground. Olimar lands the Dolphin Lander in the first clearing he sees. The 4 Hocotatians step out of the ship but have trouble bringing any Pikmin to explore with because of all the acidic water, not that they can explore much of anything beyond a pitch-black den and a narrow path. As they explore the eerily vacant area alone, monstrous roars echo from the distance.

The party advances past, under, and over the many brambles and eventually makes a startling discovery: the Winged Onion, trapped by a few thin brambles coiling around it, keeping it suspended in the air. Several Winged Pikmin struggle, to no avail, to free it. Though the leaders can propagate Winged Pikmin with the limited resources they find, their Onion can not be freed. Regardless, after bolstering their Winged Pikmin population, they press on, passing a large but unseen beast shrieking and thrashing under a dense cluster of brambles.

The echoing roars become increasingly louder and clearer until the Hocotatians and their Winged Pikmin come face-to-face with the source of the sounds and the brambles, an angry Hydroe Host. After its defeat, its teal brambles gradually dry out and become brittle enough to be destroyed, opening up Sprawling Swamp significantly, and allowing the Winged Onion its freedom by the end of the day. In the coming days, more brambles will deteriorate and eventually disappear, and enemies will repopulate the area. Along with this, the Winged Snagret will free itself, presenting an ever-present danger until it is disposed of.
