Family Amphituber

The Translucent Wollywog is a robotic amphituber that is essentially a more difficult variant of the Large-Mouth Wollywog, thrusting its tongue out three times in rapid succession rather than just once. It initially sits in a pond in the center of its arena, attempting to hit its prey with the glassy weakpoint at the end of its tongue. After thrusting its tongue for the ninth time, it hits the creature's face on its way back, dazing the beast and allowing its tongue to be attacked. After the tongue's weakpoint is destroyed, it is replaced by a spiked ball, the wollywog attacks at a much faster pace, and its new weak points become its cheeks. Once these are destroyed, the creature will begin to jump wildly across the arena, and after four hops alternating between small and large, it thrusts its tongue out, also revealing the weakpoint on its back. Once its final weakpoint has been destroyed, the Translucent Wollywog will scream, collapse, and explode.

The Translucent Wollybot appears in Pikmin: Wide World as a tougher version of the Yellow Wollybot, both of which are found exclusively in Ancient Metalworks along with many other robotic enemies and bosses. The Translucent Wollybot is only found underground, as the boss of Chemical Reservoir. Due to its appearance and where it can be found, the Translucent Wollybot is similar to the Ghost Wollywog, another amphituber than can only be found in caves. Upon entering its arena, the middle of which is filled with water, the Translucent Wollywog will leap out from the water and attempt to crush Olimar, Shacho, and their Pikmin squad with its body. They move out of the way just in time, however, and dodge again as the Translucent Wollybot attempts to hit them with its long tongue. The battle against the creature starts immediately afterward. Much like the Yellow Wollybot and other robotic enemies such as the Red Bulbot, the Translucent Wollybot can only be damaged by attacking its large, glowing, glass weakpoints with Rock Pikmin. It has four of them, which are always exposed; one is at the end of its tongue, two of them serve as its cheeks, and another is on its back. Using any other Pikmin type to attack the creature's body is futile, as only Rock Pikmin can destroy its weakpoints, which is the only way of killing it. However, the various rocks strewn about the Translucent Wollybot's arena can be used to deal heavy damage to its weakpoints. The rocks have limited uses and will eventually break. If bomb rocks have been brought into Chemical Reservoir and lasted by the time the final sublevel of the cave is reached, they can also be used as very powerful weapons against the Translucent Wollybot. Be careful not to accidentally submerge those bomb rocks in water or else they will become duds and act like very brittle rocks that break after one use.

The Translucent Wollybot strongly resembles the Yellow Wollybot in every way except coloration. It looks like a toy frog, but instead of being yellow, and having red toes with green webbing between them, and black eyes, the Translucent Wollybot is almost entirely blue and, as its name would suggest, see-through. Its eyes glow yellow, which makes the creature's position easily visible.

During the battle against it, the Translucent Wollybot will alternate between trying to crush Pikmin and leaders with its body and thrusting its tongue at them to throw them back and damage them. This means that it will be continually chasing its prey around its arena to be able to reach them. It moves and attacks faster than the Yellow Wollybot, and also attacks more times in succession. Like the Yellow Wollybot, it does not float in the air before landing, requiring swift evasion to avoid Pikmin deaths. If leaders and Pikmin get too far away from it, the Translucent Wollybot is able to quickly swim across the water to reach them. One of the Translucent Wollybot's weakpoints is at the end of its tongue, and hitting it with Rock Pikmin or even fewer times with a rock will cause it to shatter. Unlike in Pikmin Adventure, its tongue's weakpoint will not become a spiked ball after it is destroyed. If the creature's tongue is hit, even after its weakpoint has been destroyed, it will slam against the Translucent Wollybot's head when it retracts, stunning the creature for a short period of time. When it comes to, however, it will immediately attempt to land on and crush any nearby leaders or Pikmin, unlike the Yellow Wollybot. Two more of its weakpoints serve as its cheeks, which are usually easy to break. A fourth weakpoint is present on the Translucent Wollybot's back, which can be reached by swiftly running around it or throwing Rock Pikmin or rocks over its head to hit it. When a weakpoint has been shattered, the Translucent Wollybot will reel back, remaining stationary for a few moments and shaking itself to regain its senses, where it will move at a dramatically increased pace for some seconds before returning to normal. During the time it is stunned, another of its weakpoints can easily be destroyed. Broken weakpoints will cease glowing and become black. When all four of its weakpoints are destroyed, the Translucent Wollybot will immediately stop in place and shake violently, then frantically and erratically hop around a small distance, and after a few seconds, violently explode. This explosion can kill Pikmin. Because it explodes, the only remains the Translucent Wollybot leaves behind is HP Sparklium icon.png × 35.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The translucent wollybot is yet another mechanical creature we've discovered and battled. It seems to be a stronger, more aggressive, and subterranean relative of the yellow wollybot, which has only been seen on the surface or quite close to it. It is reminiscent of a similar relationship held between pale wollywogs and yellow wollywogs. It doesn't seem to eat at all, and instead destroys any creature that enters its territory.

Shacho's notes

Maybe if Hocotate Freight ever ends up in the middle of a swamp or pool, I'll be sure to have Olimar or Louie bring one of these creatures back to guard my company's buildings. They would never be seen by potential burglars at night! ...Except for their glowing eyes, but they look enough like fireflies, I think.

Marie's notes

Although the translucent wollybot is commonly found underground in industrial locations, it can survive aboveground just as easily as it can under the surface. If it wasn't for its somewhat offputting appearance and gaping mouth, I would totally have one as a pet! They love water, so I'm sure it would love to dive into a swimming pool any day. The only trouble would be getting it back out of one...

Louie's notes

Inedible, unless you like the taste of metal and glass.

Dolphin Lander's notes

Sometimes, I wonder if all these mechanical creatures aren't just really big toys. Really big, Pikmin-eating toys that seem to do anything they want. Oh... I'm just that. Except I don't eat Pikmin, I store them when needed.
