Family Flitterbie

Unmarked Spectralids are insects that resemble small butterflies with wings colored either red, yellow, or purple. They are completely harmless, and do nothing but flutter around. Aboveground, they hide in specific patches of plants and appear upon being disturbed, though in some caves they are readily visible; they gradually fly up and away sometime after Pikmin and leaders come within range of them. Their color indicates what they drop when killed, yellow ones dropping nectar, red ones dropping ultra-spicy spray nectar, and purple ones dropping ultra-bitter spray nectar. These creatures are so delicate that, if touched by a single Pikmin, they will instantly collapse and die.

Notes

Olimar's observations

These small bugs are pretty to look at and are completely harmless. I bet these would make great pets back at Hocotate! Although, bringing an entire alien species to live back home probably won't go over well with the law.

Cookin' with Louie

Spectralids don't provide a lot of meat, but the exquisitely elegant wings are surprisingly tasty, particularly when expertly prepared with a sweet candied glaze.

In Pikmin V, Unmarked Spectralids take their spot back from the various marked spectralids from Pikmin 3 and beyond, those being White, Yellow, and Red Spectralids, moving into their family and getting an explanation on their differences compared to said species. Along with the white variant, there are also new pink, green, and black colors to match the new sprays.

Notes

Brittany's notes

Unmarked Spectralids distinguish themselves from the various Marked Spectralids by their unique coloring mechanism. Their pigmentation is adaptive to the color of syrups that they intake, creating a remarkable display of chromatics within a single species that make them popular among collectors. They're also popular among scientists, especially the military (to my dismay...), who hope to study this system in order to develop better camouflage and adaptive technologies.

Olimar's notes

Hitting one at all will kill it and cause it to drop any nectar or spray they're carrying, but all kinds are notably skittish and erratic fliers. Yellow and Winged Pikmin have an easier time taking them down, and if one carries a spray, it's usually worth it due to their rarity.

Louie's notes

The true flavor of these creatures comes from their wings; the more vivid the color, the more flavorful the wing. They crumble to the touch, so they work well as breading. Alternatively, use the body as an anchor and stick it on a kebab.
