Attacks Corrodes Pikmin

The Acidic Beetle is a scarab beetle appearing in Pikmin: The After Years. Unlike Anode Beetles, they have green spots and spray acid when the two of them meet. This attack will asphyxiate all but Green Pikmin. Throwing a Green Pikmin on top of it will flip it over. Thrown Purple Pikmin will also flip multiple of these beasts over due to the shockwaves they create upon landing, but take great caution to not accidentally kill any.

I think these beetles may spray acid. Or lime juice? Not sure... – The ship, upon discovering the Acid Beetle

The Acid Beetle is a new species of scarab beetle that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They have an appearance similar to that of the Anode Beetle, and other scarab beetles. The Acid Beetle has a large, round body with a black exoskeleton. On each wing lays four green, glowing dots. The Acid Beetle has four stubby, black legs with green feet, and two legs on each side of its body. It has a smaller head on the front of its body with two eyes with green sclerae and two black antennae with glowing green endings. The interior flesh that lies behind the scarab beetle's wings and underbelly is of a dark green coloration.

The Acid Beetle can be found in large groups usually consisting of around five to ten scarab beetles. They will move around by scuttling on the ground, occasionally stopping to rest, before continuing to move again. When there are at least two or more Acid Beetles close to each other, they will begin to shift their wings together; which creates small acidic droplets in the process. When they find another Acid Beetle to lock onto, the two beetles will point their rears toward each other, before opening up their wings and releasing a large burst of acid around them. The acid will create a pool around the two beetles, along with a line of the liquid connecting the two puddles. The acid puddles last around twenty seconds before dissipating. Any Pikmin that are not resistant to acid will be harmed when they get splashed by or step into the acidic pools. The acidic attack of an Acid Beetle can be interrupted if a Pikmin lands on it or if a shockwave hits it, which will flip it over and expose its soft, vulnerable underbelly. If not killed in time, they will flip back over, and release a small burst of acid around them to shake off and corrode Pikmin.

The Acid Beetle can be defeated by using Green Pikmin, as they are immune to acidic substances. Throwing a Green Pikmin on the Acid Beetle's back and then swarming it with Pikmin will lead to a quick defeat. Throwing a Purple Pikmin near the scarab beetle will cause it to flip over due to the shockwave produced from the impact of the Pikmin. Green Pikmin can save any Pikmin that are being burned by the Acid Beetle's acid by whacking it out of the victim's stem.

In Overlord mode, the Acidic Beetle moves faster and has more health. They also don't stay flipped over for long, making their window for defeating them much shorter.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: Acid Beetles, as their name implies... utilize acid!

Olimar's notes

The Acid Beetle finds mates by, well, spraying acid at each other. This acidic spray is measured in length by the females. The longest spray of acid will determine the male it chooses to mate with and lay eggs. It just so happens that the gland that produces this acidic substance discharges it when the Acid Beetle is threatened. So, it also acts as a defense tactic. It's not like it needs it too much, the Acid Beetle already has a thick exoskeleton that shields it from predators.

Louie's notes

Be sure to not only strip the Acid Beetle of its exoskeleton, but to completely absorb all acid from it to not hurt yourself when consuming it. The insect is best served dried, and cut into thick, wide slices for you to eat with dipping sauce; preferably mustard.

President’s notes

Wow, this bug reminds me of the one time that I ate these super hot chili peppers. It ended up not going well with my stomach, so I had to rush to the bathr–

I should probably stop writing this in case my employees find it...

Overlord’s thoughts

A mating ritual that hurts a lot! Like, a LOT. Having corrosive acid sprayed on you is no laughing matter. Those poor Pikmin truly are in pain when they get hit by that substance.
