Watch out for its skewer tongue! – The ship, upon discovering the Archertongue Ribbin

The Archertongue Ribbin is an enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They resemble some form of fish, having a body shaped like one. The ribbifin is covered in patches of dark green, lime, and brown scales that poke out in chunks at the top of its head. The front of the ribbifin has two eyes with pitch-black sclerae, two fangs protruding from its mouth, and two nostrils. The creature has four stubby legs with sharp, white claws, and an orange tail.

The Archertongue Ribbifin can be found wandering idly around its territory, which is usually near water. When the ribbifin spots its prey, it will position itself in the direction of the target, and it will launch out its long, spear-like tongue at its position. This attack can skewer multiple Pikmin at once, as it drags its tongue back to its mouth and swallows them whole. If the ribbifin misses its target, it will end up getting its tongue stuck in the ground, and it will attempt to pull itself free for about seven seconds; serving as an opening for attack. If attacked, the ribbifin will shake off Pikmin by swinging its tail around in a circle around it.

The Archertongue Ribbifin can be dealt with in numerous ways. One way is baiting the beast to get its tongue stuck in the ground, then attacking it when it does. Alternatively, Rock Pikmin and Weighted Pikmin are immune to the blunt force attack of the ribbifin, so they cannot be consumed. If the ribbifin hits a Bomb Pikmin with its tongue, then it will be stunned for a short time, also dealing huge damage to the beast.

In Overlord mode, the Archertongue Ribbifin can eat Pikmin by biting in front of it if they get too close.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The tongue of an Archertongue Ribbifin can get stuck if it misses its attack, use it to your advantage.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2 (Overlord mode): Don’t get too close to the Ribbifin when its mouth is free, it will bite!

Olimar's notes

This species of Ribbifin is amphibious. Using a film of water that it wraps itself in, it can survive outside of water and in it. The tongue of an Archertongue Ribbifin is pointed and sharp, allowing for the creature to easily hunt and take out its prey. Their skin pattern allows for the beast to hide inside the sand, making them quite the effective hunter.

Louie's notes

First, remove the skin, bones, and film of this amphibious beast. Then, mold the meat into a large drumstick and roast over fire. The trick is to douse the beast in the internal juices of the mandiblard species as you do so to enhance its flavor. It’s a juice that works wonders on all ribbifins.

President’s notes

Hopefully I don’t actually step on one of these guys when they’re hiding in the sand, though I’ve never seen one hiding. I guess that means they’re really good at it!

Overlord’s thoughts

I think that this is a fish. Emphasis on think. It somewhat resembles a lizard, or frog? A little bit of beaver? Dinosaur?

Attacks Eats Pikmin

The Archertongue Ribbifin is an enemy in Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers. Although it looks vaguely like a tripedal lizard, it is actually a fish, as befits a member of the ribbifin family. It has a long body, large fangs, three fins that evolved into clawed feet, and a long tail fin that ends with yellow and orange markings. Its body displays various shades of yellow, tan, and brown. Its eyes are mustard-brown, and it has numerous growths on its back.

A creature based on a frogfish, the Archertongue Ribbifin remains stationary but will reorient itself when it senses prey such as Pikmin. When it is ready, it will try to skewer them from afar by using its tongue, which has a triangular tip, like an arrowhead, before rapidly retracting it and eating them. Its attack is similar to the hunting tactics of a frog.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The Archertongue Ribbifin, like other ribbifins, is an amphibious creature. It can breathe on land just as well as it does in the water. A sticky film allows the Archertongue Ribbifin to survive out of the water. Its patterned skin helps disguise it in sandbars, where it buries itself and uses its tongue to catch creatures by surprise.

Louie's notes

Not the most thrilling dish, but nonetheless, Archertongue Ribbifin fillets can be a very filling and fairly delicious meal to share with your peers. Don't forget your paprika and lemon juice!

Ship's comments

It's a fish with the texture of sandpaper. I guess that's what happens when you spend most of your time out of the water, but SOME level of skin care would be nice!
