In Pikmin 5, Black Pikmin are poisonous, parasitic Pikmin that have yellow eyes and brown leaves. They are not black but are instead tinted black. They cannot be in the same group as White Pikmin, or else they will fight. Their abilities include surviving nightfall and the poison of the Black Widowmaker, and being able to heal faster than most other Pikmin. Black Pikmin can hide better than other Pikmin types, which they are able to throw and hold. Black Pikmin communicate by screeching instead of by making normal Pikmin noises.

Background

Black Pikmin were created from Red Pikmin that ate blue, glowing, parasitic mushrooms and were infected by the parasites they consumed. When these Black Pikmin began reproducing and making real Black Pikmin, the parasites then left the Red Pikmins' bodies, leaving them to discover the new parasitic Pikmin.

In 3914, Olimar found Black Pikmin in a cavern, later named Black Pikmin Cave, and discovered their abilities. Olimar later used the Black Pikmin to defeat the Black Widowmaker and free his son. In the Oldest Tree, Olimar and his family use the Black Pikmin to brave the challenges and find the final piece, a map piece for the universe from PNF-404 to Hocotate. When they finish the final day, blasting off and watching the Pikmin fight, Olimar feels sad seeing them die.

On September 1st, 3914, a group of remaining Black Pikmin look outside to see the S.S. Drake land. The Koppaites are shocked to see parasitic bulborbs and Black Pikmin, along with Purple Pikmin and White Pikmin. They later collect juice and leave the planet, bringing some Black Pikmin with them for further research. It is later revealed Black Pikmin are descendants of parasites, and as such, have parasitic abilities.

Black Pikmin are Pikmin said to appear in Pikmin Chronicles. They are the result of Pikmin being exposed to the radiation that is spread later in the story of the game. Black Pikmin are the very last Pikmin encountered. They appear to have smaller heads with a horn-like protrusion on either side and appear to have angry-looking eyes, which glow yellow. Their angry-looking eyes are actually just the result of their horns growing in front of their eyes, which makes them look angry.

Black Pikmin are the only types of Pikmin that can vanquish dark enemies. They are also capable of killing Waterwraiths just like Purple Pikmin can. If a Black Pikmin is eaten, the beast that ate it will melt. Black Pikmin can clone themselves but will be cloned as seeds, with the location having an effect on their cloning. They are very hard to handle.

The Black Pikmin is a Pikmin type in Pikmin I known for its bloodlust and anger issues. It is found in the Deserted Highlands, as the fifth Pikmin discovered. The Black Pikmin is covered entirely by black fur; this is to live without problems in deserts. It also has a pair of purely red eyes, like White Pikmin, and it also has a torn-up stem.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This peculiar species of Pikmin has evolved to live in deserts, thus gaining black fur. It is a close relative of the Crimson Bulbmin, being in the same genus. A common theory for this is a branch from a common ancestor between Black Pikmin and Crimson Bulbmin absorbed a Bulbmin corpse, making the Onion gain abilities to create parasitic Pikmin, which then evolved into the Crimson Bulbmin. It has higher levels of aggression than even Red Pikmin, and combined with bloodthirst and not being able to be panicked, this makes a perfect hunter.

Louie's notes

I recommend to not try to hurt this Pikmin in any way. Trust me, because my finger has been broken.

The stem of a Black Pikmin is not attached to its head but is still present, and at the end of the stem is either a tattered leaf, bud, or flower, none of which having an impact on the Black Pikmin except appearance. A ghostly aura surrounds their bodies. Black Pikmin can survive shadow, a poison-like gas that kills all other Pikmin types.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The black Pikmin is one of the most complex and mysterious species of Pikmin. It sports two beady, yellow eyes, along with its small, black body, which it can move swiftly. It can generate a shroud of electromagnetic energy to create a stealth field powerful enough to cover twenty Pikmin or so. Black Pikmin are feeble enough to not give other creatures or Pikmin a powerful electric jolt. This being said, however, the electromagnetic field is not without its faults: it appears to be active all the time, yet works most effectively in the shadows; it appears that the ultraviolet rays emitted from the sun interrupt the field, making it unable to function properly. In the shadows or at night, the field works flawlessly, only being interrupted by powerful jolts or disruptions such as being knocked over, exposure to certain pitches of sound, and an intense spike in adrenaline. Therefore, it may be gathered that maintaining this stealth field could possibly be a somewhat voluntary action since the field is disrupted when the Pikmin is distracted. Also, the electromagnetic field does not block strong currents of electricity. This merits further research.

Black Pikmin always appear as if they are emerging from a vortex-like shadow beneath their feet. Black Pikmin are as fast as White Pikmin and, also like White Pikmin, have an effect on an enemy that ate one. Enemies that eat a Black Pikmin can either be stunned for sixty seconds when in a cave or for the rest of the day if outside. If that particular enemy is not sent into an Onion by the time the effect wears off, it will resume its normal behavior but with a Pikmin stem sprouting from it. The fate of the enemy depends upon the statuses of the Onions; if a Black Onion is created, the enemy will go in there. Otherwise, the enemy will enter the Onion containing the most Pikmin. While stunned, if that enemy is sent into an Onion that isn't the Black Onion, it will produce the same amount of Pikmin and the Black Pikmin will be produced again. If the enemy goes into an Onion while not stunned, it will produce one extra Pikmin seed corresponding to the color of the Onion it entered. The Black Pikmin that was sacrificed will not be produced again, however. If the enemy enters the Black Onion, a Bulbmin will be produced.

The leader can use its flower as a whistle. There are many groups of Black Pikmin that do not have an Onion, and groups that do are large and protect it with their lives. If a friendly Black Pikmin leader is sent to a passive Black Pikmin leader and has more Black Pikmin under its command than the passive leader, the passive leader will join the friendly leader and become friendly. Black Pikmin are Pikmin that, like Purple Pikmin, suffer from any hazard. However, when an enemy tries to get it off, the Pikmin will stay on because of the Pikmin's claws. They come from Onyx Candypop Buds. They come in handy with arachnorbs and large grub-dogs. At sunset, they can camouflage in the dark and ambush enemies by latching on to them. If it's a Gatling Groink, a Bulbearmin, or a Spotty Bulbear, then that enemy will be shown with the Black Pikmin the next time that area is visited. Other enemies' bodies will be shown near the site.
