The Boney Bulblax is a species of grub-dog appearing in Pikmin Rebirth. They are part of the lesser bulblax taxonomy, and as such, they have similar anatomical features to that specific branch of grub-dog; specifically, their large muzzle, rigid jawline, and sunken eyes. In contrast to its fellow lesser bulblaxes, the Boney Bulblax has a smoother, deep black-and-tan hide, and grey eyes with thin pupils similar in structure to the Orange Bulborb's. This smooth hide is covered by a thick layer of white material made out of calcium and other materials, which gives the creature a ghoulish appearance befitting the name. This armor acts as protection, rendering it immune to most standard attacks, and the creature itself exhibits poison resistance, meaning it can consume White Pikmin without drawbacks. This nigh-impervious protection makes them alpha predators among their peers, although they gradually waste away during sleep, making them slower compared to similar species due to resulting lethargy. As an almost comical display of awareness of the protection their armor provides, Boney Bulblaxes regularly sleep near or within pools of acid; this, in conjunction with their armor, makes them virtually untouchable. However, they have one weakness, explosives, as the force they generate can break off parts of their armor, revealing their soft flesh. The distinct crunching sound their armor makes upon fragmenting renders the bulblax more prone to waking up and moving more erratically, so caution must be taken when taking on these titanic beasts. Uniquely, the weight of the bulblax will change depending on how many bone pieces still remain on it when killed, making it also more valuable in Sparklium. To maximize the value of Boney Bulblax, explosives must be fed to the beast so as not to break the armor, therefore allowing the highest amount of salvageable remains.

Notes

Magdalene's journal

Ivy seems to be pretty giddy about studying this creature. She was keeping up all night analyzing the many different compounds found on this beast. The next day, she went on and on about this creature having two bone structures or something. I don't know, all I care about is that the bone's color and texture would complement the marble tables at my home quite nicely.

Azure's salvage logs

The outer bone shell contain valuable minerals that can be ground into a power to create a strong fertilizer. It could really help the shrinking forests of our world, but sadly the soil may be too barren for it to work properly, if only we could hope.

Lenin's cooking tips

  • Calories per serving: 700
  • Serving size: 14 ounces
  • Preparation time: 3 hours

The shell makes the meat chewy, so make sure you tenderize it rigorously, but not too hard as that can make it too gamey. Put the meat in a mushroom bisque and let it sit for two hours, then finally shower the meat in your choice of herbs and spices, and let it sit for an additional hour before serving.

Ivy's biology logs

This creature has possibly the most complicated spinal structure I have ever seen for a warm-blooded creature! Its skin forms a thin layer of mucus that lets it absorb select minerals into its body for processing. Following that, it creates a thick mud that hardens before being connected and banded by thin muscles on the creature's body. This creates an exoskeleton that protects the creature against the elements and lets it thrive in otherwise inhospitable areas.

Indy's strategy guide

This creature plays dirty by cowering in thick armor, so we should as well. Flank the sides of this great titan and use your best incendiary materials to break open the armor it uses for protection. Finally, fight the creature head-on like a true soldier.
