The Frosted Arcticlops is a gargantuan continentia that serves as the major boss of Frigid Tundra, an area in Pikmin: Wide World. Instead of reacting immediately to its prey, such as Olimar, Shacho, Marie, and their Pikmin, entering its territory, the Frosted Arcticlops instead waits for them to take action against it first. Damaging the large ice chunks on its head enough to free one of the creature's eyes will trigger a cutscene of it unearthing itself and standing up, revealing its entire body and leaving a massive crater in its place in the center of its arena. While the Frosted Arcticlops rises, the leaders and their Pikmin flee to the arena's entrance and watch the behemoth awaken from a safe distance. After standing up, the Frosted Arcticlops will stamp its three hooves a few times, and then shake a massive amount of snow off of itself whilst roaring and peering at its prey. After this, the cutscene ends and the battle begins. The ice covering portions of the Frosted Arcticlops's body can be destroyed with Rock Pikmin, which are usually necessary to battle the creature, but the task can also be accomplished using rocks. Bomb rocks can be used to completely and instantly destroy the ice encasing the Frosted Arcticlops' head and hooves, and they are required to fight the creature in The Frosted Arcticlops Remix as Rock Pikmin nor rocks are available there. Purple Pikmin can not be thrown high enough to pound on the ice crystals to damage them. Sustained contact with the snow and ice present on the Frosted Arcticlops or its arena will chill, and eventually freeze, leaders and their Pikmin unless the Pocket Radiator has been collected and equipped by at least one of the leaders, which provides a leader and their Pikmin with strong cold resistance and protects them from freezing solid. The Pocket Radiator is an essential upgrade not only for the battle against the Frosted Arcticlops but also for Frigid Tundra's cold climate and the area's many causes of becoming chilled or frozen.

While it is partially embedded into the ground, the Frosted Arcticlops resembles little more than a massive pile of snow with a purple, thorny fruit encased in ice crystals atop it. Likewise, its three gray-brown legs resemble thick, gnarled roots that are partially exposed to open air. Once it stands up, however, its entire body is visible. Its main body is the same gray-brown color as its legs, but its top side is covered with snow and is dotted with ice and dead plants. On the top of the Frosted Arcticlops's body is its mouth, covered by a lid-like body part, and attached to the top of that is its head, which resembles a spiny, purple fruit. Sprouting from the top of its head are long, brown leaves as well as three thin eyestalks of the same color. Each of these eyestalks terminates with a leafy flower-like structure that holds one of the creature's dull, colorless eyes in the center. Its pupils are black, its irises are dark gray, and its sclerae are of an off-white, cyan color. Roots dangle beneath the underside of its body. Its legs each end in a large, white, fleshy hoof that becomes increasingly redder the more it is damaged. The hooves have dark speckles and smooth undersides, and surrounding each hoof is a destructible layer of ice.

The Frosted Arcticlops has a wide array of attacks it chooses from during the battle against it, which begins when the creature gets up after one of its eyes is freed, and the fight itself has three phases. As the Frosted Arcticlops stomps around its arena, it leaves behind craters in the snow covering the ground, which can impede movement for leaders and Pikmin alike. However, any craters the creature creates eventually fill back in with snow, reverting them to flat ground. The creature can easily crush Pikmin, as well as leaders, who take significant damage even with the Metal Suit Z equipped, under its hooves, no matter if the hooves are covered in ice or not. Pikmin and leaders that are near a hoof as it slams down will be knocked back a fair distance away and stunned for a short time, unable to move or get up. Additionally, snow falls from the Frosted Arcticlops with each of its movements, posing another chilling and freezing hazard. The behemoth can be damaged by hitting its fruit-like head, which can only be accessed after the ice crystals covering it have been destroyed. Because the Frosted Arcticlops is so large, however, the only way to reach its head is by attacking its hooves, which, when damaged enough to become a bright red color, will force the creature to slam each of its hooves into the ground, rendering its weakpoint accessible. As leaders and Pikmin stand on the top of its body, the Frosted Arcticlops will periodically lash its massive, slimy, dull blue tongue out in an attempt to eat them, sweeping it around itself at various speeds. Any leader it pulls into its mouth will be chewed up, and then spat out alongside a few Pikmin it may have grabbed. When the Frosted Arcticlops stands up after forcing itself into the ground to recover any damage done to its hooves, it will stand on two of its feet to force them off. Alternatively, it may forcibly blow cold air out from its mouth, instantly freezing and blowing away anything on its body, sending them to the ground below. When the Frosted Arcticlops removes its hooves from the ground, they will have developed a new coating of ice that must be broken away.

During phase one of the fight, the Frosted Arcticlops will be relatively tame, only moving around its arena without performing any special attacks, gravitating near leaders and Pikmin. In this phase, while it is down, the Frosted Arcticlops will sweep its tongue across its body once at a slow pace to lick up its attackers before eventually standing up again. Phase two of the battle begins when the ice covering the creature's head is destroyed. In this phase, the Frosted Arcticlops will periodically romp across its arena, crushing anything in its path. While it is down in phase two, it will sweep its tongue across its body twice, both times at the same average speed. Phase three of the battle begins once the Frosted Arcticlops reaches half-health, and lasts until it finally dies. Phase three is the most dangerous, as, in addition to its previous attacks, the creature may utilize two new attacks, both of which can annihilate a full squad in a single execution: it may either bellyflop across its arena at a rapid pace, or it may suddenly collapse on top of anything that may be standing underneath its body. Anything standing in the path of destruction the Frigid Arcticlops carves while it flops across its arena will be utterly destroyed. Any Pikmin or leader underneath of the Frosted Arcticlops when it collapses will be instantly respectively killed or downed, which can result in a swift defeat if not careful. While it is down in this phase, the Frosted Arcticlops will sweep its tongue across its body once at a slow speed, again at a speed that accelerates quickly, and then a third time at a very fast speed. Upon the Frosted Arcticlops's defeat, a cutscene will begin of it roaring in agony, violently gagging, and then coughing up a valuable fruit and treasure, as well as an all-too-familiar Hocotatian, Louie, in the direction of the leaders and their Pikmin. It will then slam its body into the ground, much like it does when one of its hooves is critically damaged. When it does, its head will pop off, landing upright in front of its body, and the creature will give one last horrified stare at the battle's victors before finally shriveling up and dying, marking the end of the cutscene. Its head yields HP Sparklium icon.png × 30 upon death, and although the Frosted Arcticlops's body becomes a permanent part of its arena after its defeat, its head can be taken to either the Dolphin Lander to immediately gain P3 Poko icon.png × 25 or the Master Onion to receive fifty Pikmin seeds of whichever main Pikmin type it was meant for. Louie may also be carried to the Dolphin Lander, and the night after the ship beams him up, a special scene will begin of Olimar, Shacho, Marie, and Louie conversing, although Louie doesn't talk much during it. The day after this scene, Louie becomes the fourth and final permanent playable leader. As a final note, the Frosted Arcticlops spitting up Louie upon its death is a direct reference to the Quaggled Mireclops, another massive continentia, fought during the events of Pikmin 3, where it also spits out Louie when it dies.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The frosted arcticlops is a goliath member of the continentia family that thrives in frigid environments and utilizes the cold to defend itself from creatures foolish enough to try to attack it. It drains nutrients from the surrounding soil it buries itself in, and also uses its tongue to feed on prey that walks too close by. Prey it pulls into its mouth is completely dissolved over time in powerful stomach acid, and its insides are as frigid as the air outside. Snowfall gives the creature incredible camouflage while it hunts. Should no prey be available for some time and the creature senses little to no nutrients remaining in the soil around it, it will get up and seek a new location to hunt. Eventually, it will go dormant if it cannot find enough nutrients, and ice crystals will form around its head as a defensive measure while it slowly wastes away.

Shacho's notes

Some days on Hocotate are hotter than the sun! It sure makes me wish I could put this beast's rancid but ice-cold breath in a spray can to cool off on days like those. I'm sure it would be bought up in an instant by someone!

Marie's notes

Among other reasons, this beast's size alone makes it a terrible candidate for a pet! It also much prefers arctic environments over ones that are even remotely warm, meaning Hocotate is no place for it.

Louie's notes

This beast's frozen head, when blended, makes for a fine, fruity, refreshing smoothie! No special ingredients are required, and all that's needed is to cut its head into shapes small enough to fit into a blender. Enjoy your plum-flavored treat!

Dolphin Lander's notes

Judging from Captain Olimar's notes, this creature was starving to death when we found it... and we put it out of its misery. It's sad, really, that its fate was to perish, regardless of whether or not we encountered it. Life can be cold and unforgiving sometimes, much like the frozen wasteland we encountered the frosted arcticlops in.
