The Insomniac Snitchbug is a member of the scarpanid family appearing in Pikmin 2: New Year as a relative of the Bumbling Snitchbug. Insomniac Snitchbugs fly through the air above their territory and stop periodically to hover in place or rub their hands together. While ignorant of the presence of Pikmin, Insomniac Snitchbugs do swoop down towards leaders they may see, grab up to two of them, one in each hand, and fly around for some time until violently throwing them to the ground. However, leaders in its grasp may struggle free and harmlessly fall to the ground to avoid taking damage.
Insomniac Snitchbugs have vibrant blue skin bearing yellow spots especially prevalent on their arms. Their head is connected to their arms and hanging between them and under the head is a rotund, greenish body. On their head are a pair of glowing, striped, yellow eyes, and pair of bent, yellow antennae they use to fly.
Because of their nature, Insomniac Snitchbugs pose no direct threat to Pikmin, although a leader it picks up will automatically dismiss their squad. They can be forced to the ground by having enough Pikmin latched onto it simultaneously, but a single Purple Pikmin will knock it down from the air. Swarming it will result in a fast and easy kill.

“ | This scarpanid seems quite restless... Let’s avoid the pollen it’s dropping. | ” | – The ship, upon discovering the Insomniac Snitchbug |
---|
The Insomniac Snitchbug is a new species of scarpanid that appears in Pikmin: Pitstop. They have a bulbous, dark blue body and head with two glowing, yellow eyes. Two lanky, dark blue arms with white claws hang off of the scarpanid. Like most of its kind, it has two light purple feelers which it uses to fly around.
The Insomniac Snitchbug will fly around its territory, searching for Pikmin. When it spots a group of Pikmin, it will swoop down over the Pikmin before flying back up. Unlike most scarpanids, the Insomniac Snitchbug doesn’t grab Pikmin or leaders; it will instead release a stream of pollen over them. This will cause the Pikmin to fall asleep for a few seconds, before waking back up again. This can be particularly dangerous, as sleeping Pikmin can become easy prey for other creatures nearby.
The Insomniac Snitchbug can be dangerous when paired with other enemies. It’s best to move out of the way quickly when the scarpanid swoops down, then run up to it and throw Yellow Pikmin at it, since they have height superiority. Alternatively, it's possible to throw Pikmin at the Insomniac Snitchbug while it’s swooping down, but that’s much riskier.
Notes
Louie's notes
- “Just looking at this giant bug makes me sleepy... Maybe I’ll save it for a midnight... snack... Zzzz...”
Overlord’s insight
- “This species of scarpanid feeds off of the rare Sleepshade flower. The pollen of this plant contains chemical compounds that react with the brain to induce bouts of drowsiness and sluggishness. It doesn’t seem to affect this snitchbug, however, as it’ll just eat the plant and move on. It even seems to have the opposite effect on the scarpanid, as I’ve rarely seen this insect sleep. I’m not surprised if this insect eats coffee beans all day.”
