Pikmin: The Last Battle, also known as Pikmin 4, is the fourth game in the main Pikmin series. This game is most well known for featuring an absurd amount of Pikmin species, with twenty main species. Olimar and Shacho return to PNF-404 for one final mission to retrieve the Hocotate Ship. Along the way, they reunite with old friends and may even face an old enemy...

Plot

A year after the events of Pikmin 3 and Olimar returns to Hocotate, Shacho calls Olimar into his office and asks about Louie. Olimar reports that Louie, along with the Hocotate Ship, was left behind on PNF-404. Shacho declares that they must return to find them, and he and Olimar board the President's ship and fly to PNF-404. Unsurprisingly, the ship crashes, and the two are separated. Shacho and Olimar both reunite with the Red Pikmin, and with their help, are themselves able to reunite. Meanwhile, the S.S. Drake crashes on a second mission to the planet, and Alph is able to send it a distress signal before being captured.

Over the course of the story, Olimar and Shacho rescue the three Koppaite explorers, but their attempts to rescue Louie fail, as he attacks them with the Titan Dweevil, and goes missing at the end of the battle. His fate is left a mystery. Suddenly, Shacho gets readings of a large golden substance and drags the team to the Final Trial, and the team has to defeat the Plasm Wraith once again. After defeating the Plasm Wraith, the team decides to stay on the planet for a few more days. If all treasure is collected, the area null opens, allowing the team to fight Pollutant, the spirit that caused PNF-404 to fall into ruins. After defeating it, the leaders return to their home planets and hope that the planet, and the Plasm Wraith, will be able to regrow.

Gameplay

Story Mode

Story Mode is the main game mode, and its intricacies are virtually unchanged from Pikmin 3. It focuses on the continuation of the Pikmin story and features all twenty-two areas. Six Versus Mode characters are unlocked in this mode: Shacho, Alph, Brittany, and Charlie are unlocked by finding them, Louie is unlocked by finishing Story Mode, and the Plasm is unlocked by fully completing Story Mode.

Mission Mode

This game features a Mission Mode very similar to that in Pikmin 3. There are four types of levels: Battle Enemies, Find Treasure, Defeat Bosses, and Escape Caves. The Escape Caves mode is unique, as it doesn't match any gameplay from the main game. Two Versus Mode characters are unlocked through this mode: Drake, who is unlocked by completing Battle Enemies, and The Merchant, who is unlocked by completing Find Treasure.

Versus Mode

One of the features of Pikmin: The Last Battle is a partially customizable Battle Mode, known also as VS Mode. There are three types of battles: Marble Run, Bingo Cards, and Death Battle. Marble Run is simply the battle mode from Pikmin 2, and Bingo Cards is simply the battle mode from Pikmin 3. Death Battle mode focuses on killing the other players' characters. Options include selecting which characters to play as, which Pikmin types each player starts with, how many Pikmin each player starts with, the maximum being one hundred, and the number of items and enemies in the arena, as well as which candypops are present.

Pikmin

Main species

  • Red Pikmin – the first Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Landing Site. They have above-average attack strength, which can make them extremely useful. They also are immune to fire, which makes them necessary to retrieve many treasures and fruits.
  • Brown Pikmin – the second Pikmin unlocked, and the first new species, being found in the Cave of Dreams. Their attack strength is only slightly above average, and they don't have any special immunities but are still extremely useful as they have extremely fast digging speeds. They are also too heavy to be blown away.
  • Rock Pikmin – the third Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Mountains of Foreboding. They have a very dangerous pound attack, but below average attack power after the initial throw. They are also immune to brute force, including stabbing and crushing.
  • Stalk Pikmin – the fourth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Field of Fruit. They are much taller than other Pikmin, which allows them to survive in deeper water than most Pikmin, climb small cliffs, walk through quicksand, or step over some pits. They may also rarely use a long-range pollen attack.
  • White Pikmin – the fifth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Land of Death. They have increased carrying speeds, which is useful for retrieving heavy objects. They are also immune to toxins and even have an Onion.
  • Seed Pikmin – the sixth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Cliffs of Terror. While their attack strength is below average, they have a unique ability: climbing walls. As long as they are the only Pikmin carrying an object, they can take unique carrying paths, and stay safe from most enemies.
  • Purple Pikmin – the seventh Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Forest of Power. They have above-average attack strength, although not as strong as Red Pikmin, and are extra strong carriers, being able to lift as much as ten Pikmin. They are also too heavy to be blown away.
  • Orange Pikmin – the eighth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Desert of Pain. They have average attack strength and speed, and below-average digging speeds. However, they can hold bomb rocks, and due to their shells, they are immune to explosions.
  • Mushroom Pikmin – the ninth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Garden of Night. They look similar to the more well-known Mushroom Pikmin but are a more blueish color. They have slightly above-average stats, but their main trait is that they are immune to spores from Puffstools.
  • Blob Pikmin – the tenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Stream of Life. They have average attack strength on land and extremely low attack strength when in water. One of their main abilities is that they can repair fragile pathways with their slime.
  • Black Pikmin – the eleventh Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Tundra of Peace. They have average attack strength and slightly below-average speed. They are immune to cold temperatures, which makes them ideal for destroying ice and traveling through snow.
  • Yellow Pikmin – the twelfth species of Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Cavern of Thunder. They are lighter than other species, which means they can be thrown higher and farther, but also means they only count for half on a scale. They are also immune to electricity, and can even conduct it.
  • Spirit Pikmin – the thirteenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Place of Spirits. They are slightly below average on all stats except health, which is well above average. They can also charge through walls and can survive in water, although they can't carry objects through these areas. This is most helpful for building bridges and ramps that can only be built from one side.
  • Metal Pikmin – the fourteenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Lake of Silver. They are extremely heavy, having a weight of ten Pikmin on scales, but are not easily thrown. They also die very quickly in water, and Blue Pikmin can't save them easily. They are immune to Arachnode webs, as they are too heavy to stay up.
  • Mimic Pikmin – the fifteenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Plain of Lies. They are resistant to most hazards, but far from immune. Due to their bulborb-like shape, enemies won't notice them as quickly as they do normal Pikmin.
  • Green Pikmin – the sixteenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Jungle of Elements. They have prickly skin that allows them to grip onto enemies better. They also can climb some walls, though not as well as Seed Pikmin, and are immune to being stabbed. They are also immune to most plant-based attacks.
  • Carapace Pikmin – the seventeenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Isle of Strength. They don't have very many special abilities, but it can be very useful to have a few of them because of their very high health, and the fact that they can protect other Pikmin with their large shells.
  • Parasitic Pikmin – the eighteenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Valley of Darkness. They can link themselves together to form small bridges, but only Pikmin can cross those bridges. Their main trait is the fact that, upon being eaten, they have a chance to possess the enemy, which can last until the end of the day.
  • Pink Pikmin – the nineteenth Pikmin unlocked, being found in the River of Sky. They have slightly below-average attack strength but can be extremely useful for carrying, as they have the ability to fly, which means they can avoid almost all hazards, except for webs.
  • Blue Pikmin – the twentieth and final Pikmin unlocked, being found in the Sea of Endings. They are average in all stats, and don't have any special abilities, except for one important ability: they can function unchanged underwater. This makes them extremely useful, as all other water-resistant Pikmin are unable to fight or carry underwater.

Other types

These types of Pikmin are not required to be found in story mode and lack Onions. They can only be called into a squad by random occurrence. They are listed here in order of rarity.

  • Glow Pikmin – these Pikmin are most useful in caves, as their only ability is to illuminate the area.
  • Old Pikmin – these Pikmin have above-average stats, but their most interesting attribute is the ability to lead other Pikmin. To use this ability, throw them near a squad of idle Pikmin, and then use the radar to send them somewhere.
  • Clover Pikmin– these Pikmin have average stats, but when they are in a squad, they can skew random events to that leader's favor, therefore making them luckier. These Pikmin can not affect Giant Pikmin spawns, as the game decides where to place one at the beginning of the day.
  • Giant Pikmin – each day, one Giant Pikmin will spawn in a random area. If found, fifty Pikmin must be used to unearth them. They have extremely high attack power and can kill some enemies almost instantly. One will always appear in null and is almost required to defeat Pollutant.

Enemies

All enemies are listed in alphabetical order. Bosses are listed in bold and minibosses are listed in italics. While a miniboss might appear multiple times, bosses only appear once.
