Attacks Crushes and eats Pikmin, causes panic, summons Mitites

The Rubynite Emperor Bulblax is a grub-dog appearing in Pikmin 2: New Year as a relative of the Emperor Bulblax. It remains burrowed into the ground with only its eyestalks and eyeballs exposed, and when Pikmin or leaders come close, it erupts from the ground to reveal its true form. It will then stomp towards its prey, attempting to lap them up on its massive tongue when in range. If its prey is under its body, a Rubynite Emperor Bulblax will jump in place to crush them under its weight. Additionally, when critically injured, it will roar, sending Pikmin into a panic and burrowed Mitites up from the ground.

Compared to ordinary Emperor Bulblaxes, Rubynite Emperor Bulblaxes have a more vivid yellow face and an armored backside that is partially red.

Because they can only be attacked from the front, Rubynite Emperor Bulblaxes can be a tricky foe in combat. The optimal strategy against one is to throw Pikmin between its eyestalks while it is buried and continue throwing them onto its face after it erupts from the ground, often resulting in a fast kill when many Pikmin are used. If this fails and the creature survives the attack on it, there are two backup strategies to counteract this: one is a hit-and-run tactic involving throwing a few Pikmin onto its face before it can lick them up from the ground, and the other involves leaving the creature alone so it burrows into the ground again and the initial tactic can be reattempted.

Woah! Is that a relative of the Emperor Bulblax? – The ship, upon discovering the Rubynite Bulblax

The Rubynite Bulblax is a Withered Remnant DLC enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. It resembles the Emperor Bulblax, despite surprisingly not being classified as a boss. The Rubynite Bulblax has a saggy yellow snout and face with two small eyestalks that hold eyes with white sclerae and red pupils. The backside of the Bulblax is covered in a large cluster of red crystals that are clumped on a dark red, hard rump of the beast. The ginormous body of the Bulblax rests on two small, stubby feet. Despite resembling the Emperor Bulblax, it is slightly smaller than the average Bulblax boss.

The Rubynite Bulblax will not have its eyes poking out of the ground when burrowed and idle. It will instead have its large rump protruding from the ground, with the crystals pointing up. If any Pikmin step on the rump of the Bulblax, it will burst out of the ground and roar, removing itself from the ground. It can also be awakened if Rock Pikmin are thrown at the crystals. The Rubynite Bulblax is much faster than an Emperor Bulblax, and it will not hesitate to launch its tongue and slurp up a large group of Pikmin. It can also jump up to fling Pikmin off of it. They cannot roar to send Pikmin into a panic, however.

The Rubynite Bulblax has one key weakness: breaking the crystals on its hard backside will reveal an unprotected patch of skin. This is the best place to damage the creature, as attacking its face will do minimal damage. The Bulblax will try to prevent this from happening by trying to always face them, but coaxing it into attacking will temporarily stop it from turning. Fur Pikmin are especially deadly against the Bulblax as they are hard to shake off. Feeding a Bomb Pikmin to the beast will cause it to take a massive chunk of damage and become stunned for a short while.

In Overlord mode, the Rubynite Bulblax will regenerate its crystals when it consumes Pikmin. The more it consumes, the larger the crystals will be.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The backside of a Rubynite Bulblax is soft. Break through its crystals to damage it!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2 (Overlord mode): The Rubynite Bulblax can regrow its crystals by eating Pikmin.

Olimar's notes

Although they may seem similar, the Rubynite Bulblax is not a patriarch, like the Emperor Bulblax. This species of grub-dog specifically grows a large calcifus growth on its back for self-defense if it is attacked by other grub-dogs. However, it mainly stays buried in the ground to hunt for prey. The more prey they consume, the more their crystal will grow. An apex Rubynite Bulblax would probably have a crystal clump the size of a Quaggled Mireclops'.

Louie's notes

This is the juiciest and most flavorful beast of all the Bulblaxes! It's unfortunate they’re so rare to come by. Meat is best marbled and flame-seared on each side.

President’s notes

Very shiny crystals! If only I could grow those crystals if I ate that much food. I just get fat.

Overlord’s thoughts

As if accidentally stepping on a buried Bulblax isn’t enough, it’s extremely painful when you step on a large chunk of Rubynite crystal. It hurts a lot.
