A secret base is a refuge for the player found in Pikspore and Pikmin: Shadows of the Future. They can be created when the Shelter Drill upgrade is obtained. If the player walks up to a star-shaped indent on a wall with no Pikmin and presses A, the Ship's research pod will fly down and ask if you want to use the Shelter Drill. If you select "yes", the pod will stick out the drill and use it on the wall, creating a hole that you can enter. You now have a secret base! You can bring your Pikmin inside as well.

When you first create your base, it will be a small, square room using the default cavern style. There will be a random enemy in the room. Defeat it, and the ship's pod will place a computer-like device in the room. This device, called the Control Pad allows you to do things in your base. You can only have one secret base. If you choose to create a new one, the ship will simply move the old one to the new location.

Secret base star indents can be found in all above-ground locations except for The Walkway.

If you are inside your base when the sun sets, instead of going to the ship, you will stay inside. Any Pikmin outside will die, however, and there will be a short cutscene of the current captain locking down the base with a fortified metal door. You'll have to stay in the base for the night unless you use the Sleep function in the Control Pad. The sun meter gets replaced with a moon meter for this purpose.

You can choose to lock down the base during the day as well. If you leave it open while wandering outdoors, you may find an enemy or two inside.

Control Pad

  • Decorate – allows you to change the theme of your base, add furniture, and add plants and models of any enemy that players have seen.
  • Battle – takes you to an arena with your Pikmin where you can fight monsters to get points.
  • Expand – lets you edit the basic shape of your base.
  • Storage – lets you store a few Pikmin within the base for safekeeping.
  • Sleep – lets you sleep through the night.
