The Shielded Sheargrub is a mandiblard in Pikmin 4 that is protected by a large chitinous growth covering its face. This armor-like growth is for defense against predators. Shielded Sheargrubs can not be attacked from the front, but they are vulnerable from behind, making them somewhat similar to Joustmites in terms of battle strategy. A Shielded Sheargrub can be critically injured, but not outright killed if at full health, by throwing a Pikmin onto its back.

The Plated Sheargrub is an armored mandiblard appearing in Pikmin Eco. It is orange in natural color with a red and yellow underbelly, its markings on its stomach resembling that of a bullseye target. They have elongated jaws, and as the name suggested, silver armor plates running down its back for protection against predators. Unlike other mandiblards, the Plated Sheargrub will not react when normal Pikmin attack it, since its armor plating blocks off most casual attacks. If a Pikmin is thrown directly on top of it, it will flip over onto its back, revealing its weakspot. Another method for damaging them is to use Rock Pikmin, the only Pikmin that can damage their armor plating.
Notes
In-game entry
- “Although male specimens are fairly common, I've yet to locate any female specimens aside from the common Female Sheargrubs. This suggests that all mandiblard females look the same, whereas male counterparts differ drastically depending on the species. This species has evolved its own armor plating since predation where it lives is highly concentrated, though it's questionable why it also evolved such a specialized pattern on its weakspot...”
