The Swarming Sheargrub is a red-eyed green mandiblard that travels about in small swarms at a high speed. They have no form of offense but can move quickly, often leading pursuing Pikmin astray after dispersing. Upon coming across a salvageable object such as a fruit, pellet, or carcass, they will jump and sit on top of it, weighing it down and thus making it require more Pikmin to carry. They will consume any nectar they happen upon, growing in size and weighing objects down more.

Aphid is the Swarming Sheargrub that appears in Pikmin: Antarctic Survival. Due to being a common encounter in the game's first area, Aphid is likely to be one of the first Awakened residents to join the Diamond Settlement during the events of the game. Aphid is one of the least useful residents to recruit to the settlement, though her wood-eating ability can provide some use if there is excess stored wood.

Despite being a Swarming Sheargrub, Aphid doesn't have a swarm of her own, instead having always wandered alone in search of food. The reason for this is that Aphid's egg was underdeveloped, and hatched a day after the eggs of the rest of her clutch. As the others had all left by the time Aphid hatched, she was forced to learn to forage for food and hide from dangerous predators on her own. Her survival instinct has kept her alive despite the odds, even sustaining her through the dangerous Antarctic after she found herself there.

Prior to being Awakened, the thought of being part of a swarm had never even occurred to Aphid. However, when her Awakening is complete, the first thing Aphid does after regaining consciousness is to ponder aloud why she is called a "Swarming Sheargrub", when she doesn't even belong to a swarm. The second thing she does after regaining consciousness is request to join the exploration party that awakened her and become part of their swarm, even though they had just finished attacking her in order to awaken her, which the residents in the exploration party consider quite odd.

Aphid is quite drifty and whimsical, often making strange decisions that other creatures would consider foolish. She has a habit of pondering her thoughts aloud, lacking an "internal monologue" in favor of an "external monologue" that everyone around her can hear. Because of this, Aphid talks quite a lot, which some other Diamond Settlement residents find irritating, though others find it quite endearing. She has an innate sense of danger, often able to detect approaching predators before anyone else around her can. She also has a strong sense of whether she can trust a creature, instinctively seeking out possible friends and avoiding creatures that might threaten her.

As a Swarming Sheargrub, Aphid has a ravenous appetite, able to consume several times her own size in food in a short span of time, causing her to swell up to a much larger size, though she will revert to her normal size as she digests what she ate. She is also quite fast, being able to outspeed most creatures and moving even faster when she feels threatened.

Aphid is named after the aphid, a small sap-sucking insect that is often green and considered a pest, similar to the Swarming Sheargrub.

Swarming Sheargrubs are a returning pest in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. They act just like their original incarnation, jumping onto treasures and corpses in groups to weigh them down when Pikmin are carrying them, and drinking nectar to grow in size. This particular species of Sheargrub can also not only steal pieces to bridges, hay stacks, and gold nuggets, but they can even swim in water without drowning and dying. They are much more of a nuisance than ever before.

Swarming Sheargrubs return in Pikmin: Dimensional Breach, in the Perplexing Tropics. They retain their characteristics from Pikmin 3, distracting Pikmin and fleeing at high speeds when threatened. They sit atop salvageable objects, and can even do so to piles of fragments, making the next fragment require more than one Pikmin to carry. They can not dismantle bridges or climbing sticks.

Notes

Sagittarius' notes

Unlike their base counterparts, Swarming Sheargrubs are best kept in a pen instead of an ant farm; their underground dens are simply pockets for them to take shelter from the night. Any type of food will suffice for feeding them, as long as it is moist enough for the sheargrub's mouthparts to absorb nutrients from.

Libra's notes

The creatures' iconic emerald shade makes it perfect for wear inspired by the majesty of a grassy spring meadow. Since they usually travel in swarms, harvesting enough material for multiple gowns is an easy enough task. The bigger problem is capturing a swarm of these little guys.

Derrick's notes

One would think that because Swarming Sheargrubs are harmless and come in swarms, they'd be just as good for testing as Female Sheargrubs, but in reality, the swarming variety is far too fickle for experimentation. They may not have sharp, piercing mandibles or wings, but they'd much rather lounge on important equipment than participate in an experiment, and their skittish nature makes capturing or testing hostile creatures on them one of the most infuriating things about this planet. Thankfully, their eyeballs serve as a decent good-luck charm, for protection against considerably less predictable misfortunes.
