The Vehemoth Phosbat is a large, bioluminescent moth-like creature that resides in dark caves, where it renders itself completely invisible to stalk prey undetected. With it are countless Phosbats, and several Common Glowcaps to provide light and therefore shelter from the phosbats. When near a Pikmin or leader, the Vehemoth Phosbat will reveal itself, open its mouth, and inhale furiously, creating a powerful vortex to trap them in and eat up to five Pikmin if not whistled to safety. When distressed, it frantically flaps its wings, releasing a cloud of panic-inducing particles from its hairs that chokes nearby Pikmin and causes them to scatter. When a light is activated near it, such as by having Yellow Pikmin complete an electrode circuit wired to an inactive light source, it will reveal itself and fall to the ground, blinded and helpless for a short time. When it rises off the ground again, it will not instantly go into its invisible state, so it is vulnerable for a few seconds more. When enough light sources are activated, the Vehemoth Phosbat will retaliate by roaring to activate the phosbat pods scattered about the chamber. After its entire arena is illuminated, it will be unable to turn invisible, and will occasionally retreat to a wall to rest, recovering a fraction of its health the first time it does this. Pikmin that are latched onto the resting creature will be thrown off when it prepares to take off, and throwing enough Pikmin onto its back as it flies will force it to the ground.

Attacks Eats Pikmin

The Vehemoth Phosbat is a species of aerodentia in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. The creature resembles its original counterpart in Pikmin 3. The creature serves a boss mainly found in caves. When entering the arena, an invisible being will float around until it arrives in front of the leader or Pikmin. The Phosbat will emit a menacing roar, and the battle will initiate.

The Vehemoth Phosbat will float around, staying invisible. Occasionally, it will turn into its visible state to suck up Pikmin or to spread its poison. The only way to actually harm the Vehemoth Phosbat is to get Yellow Pikmin to light up numerous electrode circuits around the area. For each one that is activated, the Vehemoth will be stunned and fall to the ground, stunned, allowing for an opening to attack. Eventually, it will get back up and shake its poison all over the squad. After three electrical wires are activated, the lightbulb in the arena will light up, and the Phosbat will fall to the ground. After charging the beast and draining it of all its health, the Phosbat will get back up, fly around erratically, and collide face-first into the lightbulb. It will tumble to the ground and seemingly perish. That is, until it gets back up and emits an even louder roar, its eyes glowing a bright yellow. That is when the true fight begins.

The Phosbat will fly around the arena until it decides to choose from a variety of attacks. Occasionally, it will attempt to suck up any Pikmin on the ground to eat. Weighted Pikmin cannot be sucked up by this attack. It may also spread its spores onto a group of Pikmin to poison them. If there are no Phosbat Pods, the Phosbat will spit some out around the arena to create even more Phosbats. The Vehemoth Phosbat will swoop down, scattering Pikmin everywhere while trying to consume them. In a wide-range attack, the Phosbat will smash its head into a wall, causing a large chunk of rock to fall onto the nearest group of Pikmin. The weakness of the Phosbat at this point is taking bomb rocks found in the arena and throwing them near the Phosbat when it is inhaling. It will suck up the bomb, taking damage and falling down. That is the chance to attack. Once enough damage is dealt, the beast will get back up and emit a roar, making Pikmin go into a frenzy and causing falling boulders to appear. Once defeated, all other Phosbats and their pods will perish as well. Defeating a Vehemoth Phosbat for the first time will grant the "Smacked the Lightbulb Again" achievement.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The Vehemoth Phosbat seems to be adapting to the occasional light being activated in its domain. Aside from this, the Phosbat tends to hunt at night, stunning creatures with its vicious poison quills. It will then inhale them and store them in its large mouth and stomach. It can only really consume smaller creatures like Breadbugs. After going back to their cave, the Phosbat will empty out the contents in their stomach for any infants to consume. It’s gross, but it gets the job done.

Louie's notes

Like a pufferfish, make sure to remove this creature's poison. Shave off all of its hair and fry it in a breadcrumb coating. Put it on a stick and nobody will ask where it came from!

President’s notes

This creature actually sucked me up while we were fighting it! Ugh! I’m going to need a couple hundred showers after getting off of this disgusting planet...

Overlord’s thoughts

After the Koppaites came to my planet, the Phosbats have been evolving to adapt to bright lights. I wonder what they are planning in the future...

Attacks Eats and crushes Pikmin

The Vehemoth Phosbat appears in Pikmin: Infection in Progress as the boss of Fungal Grotto. To encounter it, the the President must defeat all thirty-five Phosbats in the back-left clearing of the area. After this is done, the boss swoops down from the ceiling of the clearing and the fight commences.

The Vehemoth Phosbat's appearance is almost identical to that of its Pikmin 3 incarnation, but small, bright, multicolored spores litter its hair, and its yellow eyes glow in the dark.

In combat, the creature can not only inhale both Pikmin and the President but it can now crush them. Periodically, the Vehemoth Phosbat will become visible and swoop down to grab up to four Pikmin with its front paws and possibly eat any Pikmin thrown at its mouth. While distressed, it can spread toxic dust. When its health gets low enough, the Vehemoth Phosbat will periodically crashland, crushing any Pikmin underneath it and knocking back any Pikmin in front of or beside it, potentially depetaling them.
