The Violet Dirigibug appears in Pikmin 2: New Year as a member of the dirigibug family and a relative of the Careening Dirigibug. It floats in circles through the air in its territory and stops periodically to idle in place. When Pikmin and leaders approach it, a Violet Dirigibug will regurgitate a bomb rock and then carry it until it can position itself properly, and then toss it to the ground near them. After hitting the ground, the bomb rock will crack open and detonate after some seconds, harming or killing anything in the blast.
Violet Dirigibugs are quite colorful in appearance, having a purple body with red and blue details. They have yellow eyes, white antennae, and several air sacs that resemble balloons. These air sacs, in clockwise order from the foremost one, are red, purple, orange, and green, and the topmost air sac is yellow.
As dangerous as Violet Dirigibugs may appear, they can be quite easily disposed of. The most important step is coaxing one into dropping its bomb rock, if it even has a chance to spit one up, and then waiting until the object detonates. Afterward, Pikmin should be thrown onto the creature as quickly as possible to bring it to the ground. A single Purple Pikmin will bring a Violet Dirigibug to the ground instantly. After it is on the ground, it should be swarmed, and if it manages to rise into the air again it should be overwhelmed with Pikmin throws to bring it down again.

The Violet Dirigibug is an enemy in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf's Withered Remnant DLC. Violet Dirigibugs have a purple body with red and blue details. They also have yellow eyes, blue arms, blue mandibles, and a blue-tipped tail. They float in the air using four balloons of different shades of pink.
Violet Dirigibugs float aimlessly about their territory. When they spot Pikmin, they will regurgitate a small seed. Once above their target, they will drop the seed, which will plant itself right into the ground. The seed will soon sprout into a big, pink-petaled flower with a dark green stem and leaves. This flower will periodically drop nectar, up to four blobs before it stops. If the Violet Dirigibug creates blue flowers, the flower will emit droplets of water beneath it. If an orange flower is dropped, twenty Ujadani will fall from the flower. Lastly, if a red and purple flower is dropped, it will drop a random spray. The Violet Dirigibug can plant up to three flowers before it will stop planting anymore permanently.
Obtaining the many sprays and nectars from the flower is something to be taken advantage of. However, it may drop Ujadani or water droplets. The Ujadani can be taken out by White Pikmin. The water droplets can also be taken advantage of by the Cactus Pikmin, as they can absorb water.
In Overlord mode, the Violet Dirigibug may drop a white flower that many Mitites will fall from.
Notes
- Data file #1: Remember, the color of the flower will determine the prize you get from the Dirigibug!
Olimar's notes
- “It seems as if the Violet Dirigibug stores seeds within pockets in their mouth. When they spit out and plant these seeds, they mainly do this to help boost the environment they live in. The more the environment flourishes, the more smaller creatures that move in, which means easy prey for this creature. It’s a very clever tactic for hunting in this tough ecosystem.”
Louie's notes
- “Make sure to strip this Dirigibug of all seeds before frying. Any seeds may contain poisonous Ujadani… or eggshells.”
President’s notes
- “They say Pokos don’t grow on trees. Maybe they’ll grow from flowers! Plant a golden flower right this instant you foul beast! Hey! I’m talking to you!”
Overlord’s thoughts
- “A hippie Dirigibug, huh? That’s a first. But it probably won’t be the last. But hey, any animal that gives back to its environment gets the Overlord seal of approval in my book.”
