In the MediaWiki namespace, a page is called an interface page. Only administrators and interface administrators can edit pages in this namespace. In addition, pages in this namespace ending with .css or .js are furthermore restricted to interface administrators. However, all editors can propose changes on appropriate talk pages.

This is one of the more complicated and serious abilities of an administrator and must be undertaken with extreme caution because it can change the appearance of the entire website. Below are some of the more common pages; a full list can be found here.

  • MediaWiki:Common.css: style sheet (CSS) defining site appearance, and common to all skins.
  • MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning2: the copyright warning that appears below the edit window.
  • MediaWiki:Edittools: provides a list of special characters appearing below the edit box and save/preview buttons.
  • MediaWiki:Licenses: list of available licenses for images/files appearing in a drop-down list on the file upload page.
  • MediaWiki:Revertpage: text added to the edit summary when using the rollback tool.
  • MediaWiki:Sidebar: defines 'navigation' box in the top-left corner, and allows for the creation of other navigation boxes.
  • MediaWiki:Sitenotice: text that appears at the top of every page around the site, and below the tabs.
  • MediaWiki:Tagline: the text appearing below the page's title.
  • MediaWiki:Uploadtext: text appearing on the upload page, including warnings about files without copyright information, etc.
