The Flying Scuttlebug is the first member of the scuttle family to appear in The President's Adventure. They are encountered only in caves, specifically in the Shattered Sky Track and the Kitchen. A Flying Scuttlebug won't attack Pikmin initially, usually hovering a suitable distance away when a swarm of them comes close, but it will stay grounded when in the presence of a leader. When attacked, it defends itself by controlling Pikmin with its hypnotic gaze and eating them. When its health reaches critical levels, it will shake Pikmin off itself and take to the air, its health gradually regenerating. While a Yellow Pikmin can knock it out of the air, throwing a Purple Pikmin onto it before it can gain altitude is much more effective, as it will be pinned to the ground and helpless to swarming. Attacking a Flying Scuttlebug will also break any control it has over Pikmin. Leaders can freely attack one of the creatures, but can not defeat them without Pikmin or ultra-bitter spray because they take to the air to replenish their health. The Flying Scuttlebug's appearance is based upon that of the Flipbug enemy from the Super Mario Galaxy games. Furthermore, their scientific name, Flygter asa, is a combination of the Dutch word for scuttle, "flygter", and the Portugese word for wing, "asa".
