The Frightface Ponchare is an enemy appearing in Pikmin V. It resembles a rabbit, with the notable distinction that it has massive, patterned ears that cover the entirety of its body, appearing as if it is wearing a poncho. The ears droop backward instead of down, moving forward when raised and thus behaving more similarly to an elephant's ears instead of a rabbit's. The mechanics reflect the purpose of the ears: their patterning has eyespots in the middle, and it will raise the ears to scare would-be predators.
A Frightface Ponchare will roam around the entire area and can escape the boundaries of an area to travel between different places. When confronted by a leader, it will run away, however, when left alone, it will creep up on Pikmin, including ones following a leader, and scare them, at which point it will begin eating them.
Notes
Brittany's notes
- “The Ponchare family of lagomorphs gets its name from its unusually-shaped ears. The ears are evolved to provide extra protection from the cold by covering the Ponchare's body. Conspicuous eyespot patterns on the Frightface Ponchare's ears also effectively keep predators away. Unfortunately, the practical and aesthetic properties of the ears make them a common target of poachers, who are starting to become an issue on PNF-404.”
Olimar's notes
- “It is an ideal target for Purple Pikmin, because they can stun it to prevent it from fleeing and they are not bothered by its scare tactics. It can be hard to catch one to begin with, though, which an ultra-spicy or ultra-bitter spray might help with. Make use of cover to sneak up on it.”
Louie's notes
- “In case anyone doubted that ravenous space bunnies do exist, look no further! I find that the lean meat of this creature goes best in a leafy salad with berries, for those watching their weight.”
