In Pikmin: The Advanced Times, the Three Generals refers to the first Pikmin of each type that helped Olimar defeat the Emperor Bulblax in Pikmin 1: Red Pikmin, Yellow Pikmin, and Blue Pikmin.
According to legend, the Three Generals were the first Pikmin of each color Olimar plucked. They traveled with him and the three Pikmin soon became the best of friends. Then, on the twenty-ninth day of Olimar's search, he finds the the Final Trial. Excited to get home, he calls upon fifty Red Pikmin, twenty-five Yellow Pikmin, and twenty-five Blue Pikmin, totaling one hundred on the field, to clear a path to the Secret Safe. Olimar finally gets to the end of the area. He goes into the area, only to get a surprise attack from Emperor Bulbax. Unable to fight back, Olimar loses all but the Three Generals. Fortunately, the four escape with their lives, and call it a day.
That night, Olimar becomes extremely depressed because he only has one day to collect the final part. The Three Generals convince him not to give up, and Olimar decides to try and get that part, or die trying. So on Day 30, the foursome hatch a plan. The Yellow General grabs a bomb rock and throws it at the unexpecting bulblax. He becomes stunned, and the four see their chance. The Pikmin jump on the Emperor Bulbax's back, trying everything to kill it, but to no avail. Then, the bulblax uses its tongue to slurp up the Generals. Olimar, stunned, realizes that this is the end.
However, out of nowhere, the bulblax lets out a scream a collapses, dead. A shocked Olimar looks up to see the Three Generals crawl out of the Bulblax with the Secret Safe. Apparently, the Generals destroyed the Bulblax's internal organs, killing it. Olimar, as happy as can be, helps the Generals carry the final piece to his ship. Before he lifts off, he awards the Three Generals white sashes to wear across their bodies. Olimar then flies off, seeing the brave Generals attack a nearby Bulborb.
Legend has it that after Olimar left, the Three Generals established the government of the present-day Pikmin world. Even to this day, there is a shrine honoring each of them in the Final Trial area.
