Olive Pikmin are the second type of Pikmin found in Pikmin: New World. They are discovered on the first day at the top of the first dungeon, the Trunk of Blossoms. They are a lot harder to propagate than most other Pikmin because they lack Onions, necessitating the use of Jade Candypop Buds, or obtaining the Olive Medal to harvest them in their artificial Onion. Because Olive Pikmin live at high altitudes, they tend to like brighter places and have even developed a black mask over their face to shield them from bright light. This gives them superior vision in extreme brightness but essentially blinds them in the dark, especially in caves and even as sunset approaches. This causes them to trip more often and stray away from the squad. However, Olive Pikmin have the amazing ability to cooperate independently from the captains and are capable of forming bridges, catapults, and ladders out of their own bodies to move quickly and nimbly. This has the unfortunate side effect of making these Pikmin generally uncooperative with the captains and other Pikmin, and they will often simply ignore the whistle, doing whatever they please or simply playing around with each other. In illuminated places, however, they are the exact opposites. They almost never fall behind due to their eyesight, and also can not trip, and if they are somehow separated, blowing the whistle will attract them from quite a distance away, even far outside the whistle's range.

Notes

In-game entry

The nervous system of Pikmin is built so that most species of Pikmin have either very limited decision-making skills or none at all. However, this species's brain functions in such a way so that if they are separated from the leader of the group they can switch from obeying orders to functioning completely independently. This happens most regularly in caves because of the dark mask that it uses to filter out bright light. This makes it almost entirely blind in darkness. When its major sensory system is obscured like this, the Pikmin must act on its own will to prevent itself from succumbing to predators. However, once in this mode, it is extremely difficult to make them obey my whistle no matter what I do. Alternatively, when in a light room where their sensory system is at its peak, the Olive Pikmin can be more obedient than any other Pikmin I have ever known, sometimes even stopping what they are doing to come over to me from across the room. The only thing physically differentiating these Pikmin from other Pikmin at all may be this function and nothing more.
