The Sleepy Bulbear is a drowsy bulbear appearing in Pikmin: Wide World, and is found only in Arid Oasis and its caves. It is a close relative of the Spotty Bulbear, and no dwarf counterpart of it is encountered. Sleepy Bulbears may, needless to say, be found on sleeping, in a variety of positions, on dry land, alone or with another Sleepy Bulbear, sometimes accompanied by Dwarf Spotty Bulbears, and awaken upon being touched or injured, or hearing a sound loud enough to rouse them from slumber. An awake Sleepy Bulbear will chase down any leaders and Pikmin in its territory, ceasing once they flee far enough away, at which point it will seek a spot near its original resting position to resume its slumber there. Unlike some other bulbears, which fling Pikmin into the air before gobbling them up, the Sleepy Bulbear instead eats Pikmin much like a bulborb would. Any leader a Sleepy Bulbear bites down on will be chewed up, and then spat out alongside any Pikmin in the creature's mouth at the time. Additionally, the Sleepy Bulbear does not revive after death. Any Dwarf Spotty Bulbears accompanying a Sleepy Bulbear when a Spotty Bulbear passes by may choose to either stay with the Sleepy Bulbear or follow the Spotty Bulbear, a choice also made conversely.

Sleepy Bulbears strongly resemble Spotty Bulbears in appearance but differ slightly in coloration in that they have bloodshot eyes, red irises, lighter skin, and pinker lips. Otherwise, their features are the same as the Spotty Bulbear's.

The optimal strategy to defeat a Sleepy Bulbear is by sneaking up behind it, as it slumbers, with a large quantity of Pikmin, charging them into its backside. This technique often critically wounds a Sleepy Bulbear, if not outright kill it, before it has a chance to retaliate. If caught off-guard and a head-on conflict happens, throwing Pikmin into its eyes will inflict minor damage, cause the creature to flinch, and make the creature release any Pikmin in its mouth. Upon defeat, a Sleepy Bulbear will yield HP Sparklium icon.png × 8. Aboveground, its body can be brought to either the Dolphin Lander for P3 Poko icon.png × 8 or the Master Onion to receive twelve Pikmin seeds. Underground, a Sleepy Bulbear's carcass can be taken to the Lander Pod to either get P3 Poko icon.png × 8 or be stored to later gain twelve main discovered Pikmin seeds of choice from the Master Onion, but only if the cave is exited using an escape geyser.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The sleepy bulbear is a species of bulbear I discovered during my initial visit to PNF-404 and have not encountered since. It sleeps peacefully until disturbed, where it relentlessly chases down and devours whatever poor creature woke it up. The fact that this species of bulbear has reemerged is a thrilling discovery, and I'm happy to see its return!

Shacho's notes

Some nights my eyes are as bloodshot as this beast's. Being the company president of Hocotate Freight isn't everything it's cracked up to be, especially when it's undergone as many debts as it has.

Marie's notes

Although it may appear to be ill at first glance, the sleepy bulbear naturally appears the way it does, so there's no need to worry about scheduling veterinarian appointments! At least, not unless it actually is sick. Whether its eyes are colored the way they are is natural or a result of a lack of sleep is beyond me... Maybe I'll have to ask Olimar about it sometime. Sleepy bulbears are arguably the friendliest bulbear species to have, and any owner that is experienced in taking care of bulborbs will be quite comfortable having one of these as a pet.

Louie's notes

A higher fat concentration is present in the creature, requiring cutting out more of it to reach the delectable meat. The meat is soft and, if cooked perfectly, falls right off the bone! Be sure to save the bones to make a wonderful stock to make soups with!

Dolphin Lander's notes

As ferocious as I've heard bulbears can be, this one seems quite lax. That being said, however, it's still very unforgiving when someone or something disturbs it from its slumber.
