Expeditions, found by using a detector, are the main way to collect supplies and materials such as, but not limited to, fruits, seedlings, and even Pikmin. As the player walks around and blooms big flowers, items will appear nearby on the map. The player can then assign a group of Pikmin to walk to the item and carry it back, which takes place in real time. An expedition can take shorter or longer depending on the number of Pikmin used and the player's position.
Each object weighs a certain amount, and once the Pikmin are back, the items can be collected. Pikmin returning from an expedition may also have a postcard, which can be collected alongside the item the Pikmin was carrying; it will be an image of the location the Pikmin collected the item from, and will show them posing in that location. When a Pikmin reaches the maximum level of friendship, it can be sent on an expedition to become a Decor Pikmin.
