Night expeditions are exploration periods that occur during the night on PNF-404. During them, the goal is to protect Lumiknolls. Glow Pikmin, the only Pikmin accessible during the night, live in and are propagated by them. Lumiknolls contain a valuable substance known as glow sap, which is highly sought after by enemies.
At nighttime, enemies become frenzied after a short period, indicated by their eyes glowing red. In this state, they seek out and attempt to destroy Lumiknolls. A Lumiknolls' stability is indicated by a health bar in the heads-up display, and also the glowing interior as damage will cause parts of it to darken. Completing night expeditions will reward glow seeds, used to summon Glow Pikmin in caves, and glow sap, used to cure leaflings.

Night expeditions return in Pikmin 2... Again?. They remain almost the same, except that the Lumiknoll produces glow sparkles, one for every 20 remaining Glow Pikmin, rather than glow sap when successfully defended. During the night, Glow Pikmin display no resistance to any hazard, but ultra-neutral spray, always yielded by nectar eggs during a night expedition, will make them temporarily resistant to any normal hazard except for explosions, acid, getting eaten, blunt force, knockback, panic, smoke, magic, and fog. Antenna Beetles prevent obscured enemies from being displayed as a red silhouette, Static Beetles prevent seeing the Luminknoll's health on the heads-up display, and Screeching Beetles prevent the music from changing when the Luminknoll is being attacked. Also during the night, dirt mounds produce an endless amount of bomb rocks, but only supply a few at a time. Defense Mode is much like a night expedition, but as stages and with the addition of more challenges.

In Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid, night expeditions are unlocked after the All-Purpose Medicinal Press is collected. Their story purpose is to collect enough glow sap to help Bentley and Eloise's dog Roacher recover from the crash at the beginning of the story. Unlike in Pikmin 4, night expeditions function more like raids, with the player using Glow Pikmin to defend the Lumiknoll against waves of enemies. Glow pellets can now be found within Glowy Posies alongside clumps on the ground. The expedition cannot end by waiting for sunrise, and every enemy must be defeated before they destroy the Lumiknoll. Every night expedition ends with a fight against a unique boss enemy that must be slain. Some enemies, such as Dusk Spectralids, don't actively attack the Lumiknoll, and can be ignored.
In Pikmin: Wide World

This article or section pertains to Pikmin: Wide World, a fanon game created by Cheepy-Cheepy. |
Night expeditions are periods of extended play in Pikmin: Wide World that occur after sunset. They become possible after rescuing Marie, when the Dolphin Lander comes to trust the crew to take enough care of themselves. Leaders and Pikmin can stay on PNF-404's surface until quarterway through the night, after which they must retire to their respective vessels to rest. Staying past sunset halves the health the leaders regain by sleeping and increases their juice consumption by 1.25×, but gives them extra time to finish what they have to in the current day.
Night expeditions are scheduled by toggling the option to stay past sundown in the Dolphin Lander's menus, but also by accepting the Dolphin Lander's offer to stay past sundown the first few nights she allows it. While a night expedition is scheduled, sunset does not bring about its usual events. On starting a night expedition, the Dolphin Lander tells the leaders to stay safe and be careful.
At night, enemies that were active during the day return to their nests or territories to sleep or hide. Likewise, enemies that were dormant during the day, either because they were sleeping or hiding, begin to hunt for food, having greatly expanded territories or patrolling the entire area. Many nocturnal enemies are attracted to light, making navigation dangerous and necessitating extreme caution.
Moonlight is present, but the most potent illumination is cast by the leaders' beacons, Onions, the Dolphin Lander, and enemies and vegetation that produce light. The level of moonlight changes depending on the phase of the moon, with a full moon providing the most and a new moon providing none. Cloud cover in the area also affects the amount of moonlight.
The end of a night expedition brings about most changes that sunset does, including minor changes to the heads-up display and radar to track Pikmin, but not the appearance of sunset-exclusive enemies. A message appears on-screen, alerting leaders to gather their Pikmin. Afterward, there is a 30-second-long wait before the final countdown begins, starting from 10 and counting down every 5 real-time seconds until reaching 0. During this time, the area's music fades into silence. Pikmin left behind at this point may still die overnight, but have a slightly better chance of surviving if they find a place to hide as they don't have to wait as long until dawn.
Notes
Data file #1 (all difficulties): Make the most of a night expedition. Finish off tasks that just can't wait!
Data file #2 (all difficulties): Staying past sunset negatively impacts the leaders' rest and eating.
