Steve is a remarkably determined, hardworking Red Pikmin. His origins lie in a playthrough of Pikmin 1 done by the popular YouTuber Chuggaaconroy, in which a seemingly foolish Red Pikmin was dubbed as Steve by Chuggaaconroy himself. At one point in the playthrough, Steve grabbed hold of a Fiery Blowhog's corpse and didn't let go for the entire in-game day. Chuggaaconroy was unaware of this until he was looking for stray Pikmin at the end of the day and miraculously recovered Steve just before the timer hit zero, thus earning Steve Chuggaaconroy's admiration for his dedication. Later on, Chuggaaconroy used the Smoky Progg's pearl to produce one hundred "Steve children" in Steve's honor.

In The Saga of Steve, Steve was an ordinary Red Pikmin until he tried to carry the dead body of a Fiery Blowhog back to the landing site. However, he couldn't carry back and was left behind at sunset. The next day, Joe, a Blue Pikmin, and Bob, a Yellow Pikmin, found him barely clinging to life. He woke up inside an Onion.

Steve is the first party member Olimar finds in Pikmin RPG. He is recruited in Fiery Forest, has a few fire attacks, and can be compared to a melee-focused warrior class.

Steve and his two best friends, Bob and Joe, appear as the main protagonists in Pikmin: Steve's Adventure. They were left behind when the Onions were attacked by a mob of bulborbs, and it is their quest to get back. Steve's personality is brave, kind, and caring. They battle the Bulbear, defeating it. Nero, a shady cloaked individual, appears, easily defeating the trio, and attacks the Sakura Tree, nearly killing it. They wake up over a day later and find out that the Sacred Sakura Tree can not help them now.
