Toxcaps in Pikmin V are the given name for poisonous Spotcaps and have identical properties. They serve as both a standalone hazard, filling the destructible poison role that gas pipes no longer do, and as a source of the sticky mold obstacle alongside regular Spotcaps.

Notes

Brittany's notes

Toxcaps are contentious among mycologists over whether they're a true species or more accurately described as a subspecies or even a mere expression of certain recessive genes or mutations. It's what we call a species complex. The debate is due to how similar in appearance, range, and behavior a Toxcap is to a regular Spotcap, with the key difference being that the spores are, of course, toxic. It has the advantage of making the carrier easier to kill and providing a free shelter and nutrient base for fertilized spores, and this sort of beneficial mutation is how new species form.

Olimar's notes

A variant of Spotcap that releases poison spores on contact and can't be flattened with a direct hit. This makes Whites the safest option, but you can still throw Rock or Purple Pikmin to damage it on impact if you need to. Be aware of the possibility of deflowing them, as they are both slow Pikmin types.

Louie's notes

Poisonous, if that wasn't obvious. The possibility of slowly building an immunity to the toxins to enjoy the mushroom behind them is an ongoing experiment.

The Toxcap is a small species of sporovid appearing in Pikmin Evolution. It is a smaller, less-developed Toxstool, and as such shares the coloration and most physical aspects of its older variant. However, it lacks legs, and so is forced to hop along, and use its cap like a springboard to reach higher areas. The Toxcap is usually found in two different places, those being in damp areas often deep underground, or sprouting from the spore clumps of several enemies infected with the mold of the Toxstool. In fact, they regularly sprout from the mold clumps present on the Toxstool's hosts, the most notable being the Dwarf Moldy Bulborb, in a painful process that kills the host. Toxcaps regularly congregate in small groups, occasionally with a Toxstool to guide them, jumping around and spreading clouds of mold to cover the ground with. When the Toxcap flips over, it releases a small bit of mold that grows into a larger clump if not dealt with soon enough. The Toxcap's green spore clouds are highly toxic, the fumes instantly killing any Pikmin upon exposure.

Unlike its larger version, the Toxcap is unable to defend itself in any meaningful way from Roach Pikmin, the optimal Pikmin type use against it due to their poison and spore immunity, aside from scattering them by flipping over. However, particularly desperate or crafty Toxstools may absorb a large clump of mold to grow to the size of a Toxstool, granting it dramatically increased vitality. Preventing this from occurring necessitates balancing defeating Toxcaps and destroying mold clumps. Overall, while not as dangerous as the Toxstool, the Toxcap can be a major threat on its own if given the chance.
