The Arid Canyonclops is a miniboss in Pikmin: Shipwrecked Stargazers. It looks similar to its wetland-dwelling relative, the Quaggled Mireclops, but it has a yellow bulb with a structure similar to a yellow dragonfruit. It has a sandy rock as its body, and thick roots like a cactus' for limbs. Its hooves look like cacti, complete with spines, and they're green but turn progressively pinker as they're damaged. Under its lid-like mouth is a blue tongue, and the creature overall has a smaller build than its relative.

The Arid Canyonclops lives in a pit of loose sand in the Nomadic Butte. Initially, its bulb is covered by a pile of dried acacia tree leaves, but approaching it will cause its three eyes to emerge from the pile. It then raises its body up and shakes the pile off before roaring. The Arid Mireclops acts similar to the Quaggled Mireclops, but its hooves contain spines that extend whenever it takes a step, stabbing those standing too close and disallowing most Pikmin varieties to attack. Rock Pikmin can be used instead, as their bodies are too tough to be stabbed. When grounded, the Arid Canyonclops will try to lap up Pikmin with its tongue as its relative does. Every step it takes leaves temporary indents in the ground that can disrupt maneuvering. Walking under the Arid Canyonclops might cause it to drop its entire body down after a brief moment, telegraphed by a loud and resounding roar. If the Arid Canyonclops gets desperate, it can also spew water from its mouth that runs off its body and flows onto the ground, making it resemble a massive fountain.

When defeated, the Arid Canyonclops will spit up the Jaw-Breaking Cone, and collapse to the ground. When it lands, its bulb pops off.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Compared to the quaggled mireclops, this specimen is slightly shorter and not as large. Due to this, it doesn't require the nutrient intake its soggy relative does. However, water is an entirely different situation. As it inhabits an incredibly dry landscape, it uses all of its components to sap moisture from its competition. The thorns on its feet are repurposed roots that extend when under pressure, meaning it can plant itself wherever and take water from the ground. Its mouth remains open during the rainy season, causing the precipitation to fall right in. This also allows it to bait creatures like whiptongue bulborbs into approaching this colossal predator under the belief that they'll get a well-deserved drink.

In other words, if they were sapient, a society of Arid Canyonclopses would revere the greedy and self-indulgent.

Louie's notes

This creature's bulb is much more subtle than the Quaggled Mireclops' own. However, chemical compounds inside of it will make sour foods taste sweet afterward. Best consumed before all lemon-related dares to take the easy way out.

Ship's comments

It seems like all the life on this planet hates me. The shade of yellow on this creature's bulb may look appealing to the uninitiated, but for me, it just reminds me of the golden paint job I got after the debt was repaid and then some. Its swampland-dwelling monstrosity of a brother already made me adverse to the color red, but this is even worse! I'll never be able to look at gold the same way again!
