The Flat Splurchin is a species of stationary splurchin appearing in Pikmin Evolution. As the name suggests, they resemble flat discs, dotted by tiny holes with very long spines jutting out. The size of a Flat Splurchin can vary greatly, some being as small as a Dwarf Red Bulborb and others as large as a Giant Breadbug, but the entire shell is controlled by a tiny pink core in the center of the Splurchin's body. Any Pikmin, except Alloy Pikmin, that try to attack the creature on dry land will be impaled by the spines before it sucks in their bodily fluids, killing them. As they only become vulnerable due to outside factors, Flat Splurchins are often used as obstacles in more coastal areas and dens, blocking off hidden passages off the shore.

The spines of the Flat Splurchin retract upon submersion in a fluid such as water or acid, where it can be safely attacked with Kelp Pikmin and Germ Pikmin respectively. While Alloy Pikmin are immune to being impaled, they still can't attack the creature initially as the spikes are also exceptionally durable, with tossed Alloy Pikmin simply harmlessly bouncing off. However, there is a way, a very risky way at that, to do so. it involves using a crystallizing gray syrup, which causes crystal to cover the Splurchin's spines, rendering them brittle and subject to damage and allowing Alloy Pikmin to break the shell open and attack the creature's inner core. What makes this strategy so dangerous is that, if not killed soon enough, the Flat Splurchin will fire the crystals off at a high speed, the force instantly killing even Alloy Pikmin on impact. On dry land, speed and precision are a must with Flat Splurchins.

Notes

Ivy's journal

The oceans are among the least explored areas on the planet, with only the creatures that live in the shallows being widely known and studied. However, when something like the members of the splurchin family come up, even that becomes muddled. The Flat Splurchin is an amphibious splurchin, using the signature sharp spines of the family as straws to suck in oxygen and small food particles when out of the water. In the water, it will use its pores to release eggs, which will then be taken in and fertilized by other Splurchins, being hermaphrodites and all. It is a common scientific mistake to misidentify the more aquatic Round Splurchin as a dead Flat Spurchin due to similar coloring and body patterns, however, a skilled biologist myself knows that the Flat Splurchin melts into a puddle of body fluids on dry land since they lack an active organ system.

Leni's recipe book

These creatures are quite delicate to prepare. One wrong cut and your Splurchin will explode into pink goop. It is best to lightly salt and butter your Splurchin then cut it into small pieces to fill in a nice rich and creamy broth. The result is an irresistible seafood stew!

Marvin's strategy guide

The Alloy Pikmin can destroy anything as hard as a rock, but not metal, so the logical course of action is to trick the Alloy Pikmin into thinking the metal is a rock... Definitely no flaws to this plan.
