The Moldstool is a species of large mutated sporovid appearing in Pikmin Evolution. It is a larger and more mutated version of the Toxstool, with a much thicker and wartier dark green cap, and four legs to walk on instead of two. It shares many of the same abilities as the Toxstool as well, mainly its ability to spread mold and the ability to revive infected enemies. Like the Toxstool, the Moldstool is accompanied by several enemies it infected, including Moldy Bulborbs, Dwarf Moldy Bulborbs, and Moldy Slooches. The battle has two main strategies: a long, drawn-out one, and one that will make short work of the Moldstool with the creative use of Pikmin.
At first, the Moldstool is surrounded by Moldy Bulborb Larvae that must be defeated to have the Moldstool rise from the ground, as its large cap will deflect any thrown Pikmin otherwise. After standing up, the Moldstool will begin waddling about and scattering mold clouds, which poison Pikmin and leave sticky mold on the ground, making avoiding the Moldstool more difficult. Swarming is the only way to harm the boss at this point, but since Roach Pikmin are immune to mold and poison, they can attack it without issue. After receiving enough damage, the Moldstool will open its cap, finally allowing thrown Pikmin to damage it, but only to take flight, thereby beginning the second phase of the fight. While airborne, the Moldstool will produce moldy clumps, that, upon landing, burst into Toxcaps, and the mold particles it scatters will create green, toxic patches on the ground that spawn more Moldy Bulborb Larvae.
The Moldstool's most dangerous attack, however, is when it flips over to sprinkle gloom from its cap, instantly killing any Pikmin on contact and leaving behind a lingering cloudy patch of gloom on the ground. After performing its gloom attack, the creature will drift aimlessly about in the air, struggling to right itself. During this time, its two eyestalks are exposed to attack, and throwing the equivalent of ten Pikmin in weight at both eyestalks, totaling twenty, will cause them to hang on for dear life before the Moldstool itself plummets to the ground, landing on its head with a massive thud and potentially crushing any Pikmin underneath it at the time, making it essentially to call Pikmin away from it as it begins to fall. Afterward, the Moldstool is shown to have hit the ground so hard that its head is in fact buried in the ground, rendering its body completely vulnerable. Eventually, the Moldstool will recover, pull itself from the ground, and return to the air to repeat the cycle. A much faster and easier method to take down the Moldstool consists of using Kelp Pikmin and their long leaves to grab hold of one of the creature's four legs. One Kelp Pikmin on each leg is sufficient enough to weigh it down at any point.
Upon defeat, the Moldstool shrivels up and reveals a piece of refuse veiled in black smoke, meaning only Roach Pikmin can carry it to the ship. Overall, the Moldstool presents more of a challenge than the Toxstool, with its own strategies, and the addition of gloom provides even more dangers to the battle.

Attacks | Spreads mold, converts Pikmin |
The Moldstool is a boss sporovid appearing in Pikmin: Other Frontier. It is a close relative to the Puffstool, even sharing the same body structure, and has a warty green cap. One Moldstool serves as the boss of the final sublevel of Spoiled Mound, and present with it are fire geysers and Olive Bulblings. A passive creature, it flees from approaching Pikmin and leaders. Its only form of retaliation is releasing a cloud of mold, converting exposed Pikmin into Moldmin, an attack it initially performs only while actively attacked, although after reaching half-health it also sprays mold while fleeing. Because of the mold, Cleaner Pikmin are the best option when taking on these creatures.
Notes
Olimar's notes
- “The Moldstool seems to share most of the same anatomy and genetic information as the Puffstool, which I discovered on my first trip to this planet. However, this specimen seems to spread a type of mold that can cause neural problems when inhaled. Due to the lack of any Puffstools on this trip, I theorize that the Moldstool is an evolution of the Puffstool.”
Louie's cooking tips
- “Inedible. The mold on this beast spoils any food it comes into contact with.”

Attacks | Scatters fatal poison, revives enemies |
The Moldstool appears in Pikmin: Spark and has an appearance identical to that of its Pikmin: Other Frontier incarnation. Living in dens, these sporovids defend themselves by spraying a cloud of lethal green poison that kills all Pikmin except White Pikmin, which should be used to fight it. Additionally, they can produce white mold spores that don't affect Pikmin but do reanimate corpses on contact, and, if possible, change the hazard, if any, used by an enemy to poison. A Moldstool, when encountered, typically is surrounded by several enemies it revived to assist it as a mode of defense, and when attacked, runs away before flipping over. Upon death, it drops the Smoke Capsule, a container of pepper worth × 200.
Notes
Abel's medical journal
- “The mold they make oddly can disinfect any other bacteria applied onto it. Needs further medical study.”
Lyn's sale review
- “The mold acts as both a good decoration for moss and a good deterrent for pests as the mold will simply kill them.”
PIX's creature scan
- “Sporovids that coexist with a species of fungus. This fungus is fatal to Pikmin but can animate otherwise dead neural matter. Very hazardous to plant life.
- Habitat: dens
- Niche: parasite
- Maturity age: 5 months
- Average lifespan: 5 years
- Breeding season: winter”
