The Autumnal Grotto is a location in Pikmin: Before the Impact that serves as the first area. It is set in a forest with falling leaves and a giant stump in the middle, serving as the throne for the Sovereign Bulblax. Stevvy and the S.S. Titan make an emergency landing here after being struck by a stray meteor. The Autumnal Grotto is home to two species of Pikmin, Red Pikmin and Yellow Pikmin, as well as their respective Onions.

Plot

During the prologue, Stevvy and the S.S. Titan make an emergency landing in the Autumnal Grotto after losing most of their crew in a harrowing encounter with a stray meteor. The place they land in happens to be close to some strange red creatures. Stevvy instantly recognizes them as Pikmin, as he read about them in Captain Olimar’s voyage log. With the help of the Red Pikmin, he takes down a Red Bulborb, which was trying to attack the dormant Red Onion. Upon taking the Onion back to the landing site, it springs to life, allowing the Pikmin to propagate. Near where the Red Bulborb was, Stevvy discovers a fruit, the Sunseed Berry. Stevvy realizes that the fruit on this planet might be able to be turned into juice, mitigating the loss of most of the rations on the S.S. Titan. After bringing back the Sunseed Berry, the S.S. Titan analyzes it, and swiftly turns it into juice. With the discovery of edible matter on the planet, Stevvy realizes that there must be more fruits on this planet, and he makes a goal for himself, to collect every piece of fruit on the planet. While exploring the area, Stevvy flattens a paper bag and discovers a new landing site guarded by Bulborbs. After taking them out, he discovers that he can move the base to any of the landing sites he discovers. After flattening another bag, he discovers a Yellow Onion. After taking the Onion back, it merges with the Red Onion, and it spits out a yellow seed. This yellow seed is revealed to be a Yellow Pikmin. After this, the area fully opens up, with raw material being available after Yellow Pikmin are discovered. The main goal is to beat the Sovereign Bulblax at the top of the stump, which holds the Intelligent Data Glutton. After the Intelligent Data Glutton is collected, the S.S. Titan’s radar is able to be expanded, which unlocks a new area, the City of Giants.

Key sections

Giant stump

In the middle of the map is a giant stump with a winding path carved into it. This path leads to the top of the stump, where the Sovereign Bulblax is located. This winding path also holds a Portable Sunset in a little alcove.

Horned Cannon Beetle hideout

Near the bottom of the map is a small hideout that holds a Horned Cannon Beetle, as well as some Dawn Pustules. Getting it requires constructing two clay bridges and breaking down an electric gate.
