The Ghastly Empress Bulblax appears in Pikmin: The After Years as the spirit of a deceased Empress Bulblax, a grub-dog matriarch. Its markings and general features are similar to those of the Ghostly Bulborb, Dwarf Ghostly Bulborb, and Ghastly Emperor Bulblax, but its body is much larger, elongated, and composed of five distinct segments; its comparatively tiny legs dangle above the ground. The beast mainly attacks by rolling around and crushing everything in its path, including Pikmin, leaders, and its own offspring, which Ghastly Empress Bulblaxes occasionally give birth to.
As is the case with other spectral grub-dogs, this bulblax can phase through walls and the only way to be able to hurt it is by exposing it to light. Using the Reflector to direct light, a required action, at the Ghastly Empress Bulblax will cause it to become opaque and solid, and vulnerable to attack. Then, throw Pikmin, preferably Purple Pikmin onto its face, and whistle them back before the beast throws them off. After shaking Pikmin off, the boss rolls from side to side across its chamber in an attempt to crush its aggressors, passing through walls when necessary. It can not be petrified. Upon defeat, a Ghastly Empress Bulblax will disintegrate into dark matter, a characteristic of creatures comprised of dark matter.
