It may be found asleep or actively birthing larvae, and may cause boulders to fall from the sublevel's ceiling upon colliding with a wall while retaliating from attack.

The Empress Bulborb is a boss grub-dog in Pikmin 3.9. Olimar, on previous adventures, had misnamed this creature the Empress Bulblax. It behaves and looks as it does in Pikmin 2. To defeat the Empress Bulborb easily, throw Purple Pikmin at its face.

This disgusting grub is the queen of the grub-dogs! Take her out, Captain Olimar! – The ship, upon discovering the Empress Bulblax

The Empress Bulblax is a returning boss that appears in Pikmin: Decayed Leaf. Being the most distinct boss in the grub-dog family, it can only be found deep below in caves, mainly those themed after grub-dogs, and there are no variants of it. The Empress Bulblax is a large, caterpillar-shaped grub-dog with five distinct red segments, with white spots along the top, making up its body. Each segment contains one brown orifice, and the underside of the creature is of a white-red coloration. Like most other Bulborbs, its snout and head are of a peach coloration, with two eyestalks holding eyes with white sclerae and blue pupils. The creature also has nostrils and sharp fangs, a distinct characteristic of the Bulborb species. The Empress Bulblax's two-clawed feet dangle high from the ground, right below its head on the front. On the back, there is a black orifice that the boss uses to produce Bulborb Larvae.

The Empress Bulblax will always be found curled up, sleeping in its arena, a large room with two walls on each side for the boss to slam itself on. Brushing against the creature will not wake it up, but if attacked by Pikmin or punched, the creature will wake up and uncurl itself, revealing its extreme length. It will then simply lay there, looking at the Pikmin. The Empress itself will not attack unless provoked. If enough time passes without being attacked, it will simply return to sleeping. When Pikmin begin to attack it, it will shake around in pain. If enough damage is dealt to the Empress Bulblax, it will violently shake off all Pikmin to its sides, proceeding to roar and rolling itself to one side of the arena. Any Pikmin caught under the weight of the Bulblax will be crushed and killed. Once it crashes on the wall, numerous boulders will fall from above on the other side of the arena. After the Empress repeats this process and rolls to the other side of the arena, it will roll back, returning to its passive state. Sometimes, an Empress Bulblax can be found inside of its cave completely awake. In this state, it will begin to birth Bulborb Larva to attack leaders and Pikmin. Each Empress can birth up to 25 larvae at a time, birthing more if they are killed off. If the creature is rolling around while there are larvae in the arena, the larva will be crushed and killed by the Empress' own attack.

Attacking an Empress Bulblax can be a tricky task. Attacking the Empress from the side is extremely dangerous, and attacking its back may cause a problem due to the larvae. That's why the front of the boss is the best course of action. Using Rock Pikmin and Weighted Pikmin can help negate the crushing attack of the Empress greatly. However, any Bulborb Larvae spawned before the battle begins will cause problems for any Pikmin type. It's recommended for a captain to go in and kill or distract any larvae before starting the fight. Using Pikmin that do high amounts of damage, like Red Pikmin, can help shorten the amount of attacks the Empress can perform before dying. If an Empress rolls over a Cactus Pikmin or Dart Pikmin, it will take some damage, but kill the Pikmin in the process. Once defeated, the creature will roar, before combusting into a gooey mass and leaving its first segment to be collected. It will drop large quantities of nectar when defeated. Defeating an Empress Bulblax for the first time will grant the "Toppled Queen" achievement.

In Overlord mode, the Empress is much faster and has more health. Along with this, the Empress will bite any Pikmin in front of it, eating up to five at a time. Whenever the Empress crashes into a wall for the second time, dozens of Bulborb Larvae will fall from the sky. At lower levels of health, around 20 to 30 dwarves of any type will fall instead.

Notes

  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #1: The Empress is much more vulnerable at its front than its sides or back.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #2: Watch out, the commotion the Empress causes with her wall-smashing may cause debris to loosen and fall!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #3: The Larvae the Empress spawns can become a huge problem; take them out first.
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #4 (Overlord mode): Even on its front side, the Empress is not defenseless!
  • P3 Data file icon.png Data file #5 (Overlord mode): When the Empress smashes into a wall, larvae and dwarves hiding in dens above will fall from above!

Olimar's notes

Being the queen of the grub-dogs, the Empress is on the top of the ant-like society Bulborbs live in. Numerous adult Bulborbs will hunt and forage for food in order to give to their queen so that she can birth more young. Whichever has given this beast the most food is "elected" as the prince for the creature to mate with. The mate selected ends up becoming an Emperor Bulblax, as reproduction with a grub-dog matriarch activates certain hormones which drastically increases a grub-dog's lifespan.

Louie's notes

Due to having so much meat, it's recommended to grind this beast up into a fine meat in order to turn it into a variety of things... mainly sausage links!

President’s notes

After seeing how grub-dog babies are made... I won't be able to eat for a few days..

Overlord’s thoughts

Bulborbs are such a strange species. I wonder how they evolved into an ant-like society. Then again, the Illints are literal ant-bulborbs... I should study my animals more.
