The Ghastly Emperor Bulblax appears in Pikmin: The After Years as the spirit of a deceased Emperor Bulblax, a grub-dog patriarch. Its markings and general features are similar to those of the Ghostly Bulborb, Dwarf Ghostly Bulborb, and Ghastly Empress Bulblax. The beast mainly attacks by eating Pikmin by using its long, sticky, purple tongue, and can charge after them, but can not crush them because of its lack of legs.
As is the case with other spectral grub-dogs, this bulblax can phase through walls and the only way to be able to hurt it is by exposing it to light. Using the Reflector to direct light, a required action, at the Ghastly Emperor Bulblax causes it to become opaque and solid, and vulnerable to attack. Then, throw Pikmin, preferably Purple Pikmin, on it, and whistle them away before the beast throws them off. Its backside is vulnerable to attack because it isn't covered by protective moss. After shaking Pikmin off, the boss either roars to invoke panic in Pikmin and summon mitites, or tries to eat Pikmin. It can not be petrified. Upon defeat, a Ghastly Emperor Bulblax will disintegrate into dark matter, a characteristic of creatures comprised of dark matter.
The Ghastly Emperor Bulblax also has a dark matter-infused variant, which is known as the "Dark Ghastly Emperor Bulblax". The Dark Ghastly Emperor Bulblax appears only in the Galactic Warpzone, the final cave, and it is a much stronger version of the Ghastly Emperor Bulblax that has much more health, faster and deadlier attacks, and the ability to use a new, unique attack in addition to its existing ones.
