Pikmin Odyssey is an open-world Pikmin game that takes place in Pikmin 3's timeline. In this game, Captain Olimar crashes on PNF-404 once again in search of Louie. Olimar also had bought back his ship, the S.S. Dolphin, but had to put everything on the line financially to do so.
Plot
At the start of the game, Captain Olimar crash lands once again on PNF-404, trying to find Louie after he went missing after his last adventure in Pikmin 3. While in search of his engine, he comes across a horrible sight... a Dwarf Bulborb has made it to the Red Onion before he could, and is feasting on it. After finding some Red Pikmin in a cave, he manages to take his engine back to the S.S. Dolphin. He lands at a large clearing, where he meets Dean.
Dean introduces himself, and says that he has been sent to the planet to reactivate the SPERO probes in order to supply Koppai with a constant supply of fruit for juicing. However, he states that he needs help and orders Olimar to get the Interstellar Radio, so he can call the S.S. Drake over and have Alph help him reactivate them.
With the SPERO probes reactivated, the world opens up exploration-wise. Olimar can discover Pikmin in any order he wants, rescue as many castaways as necessary, and tackle as many caves as he wants. After Olimar gathers all of his ship parts, Dean states that he has found a signal coming from the Formidable Oak and states that Olimar should investigate it. In the Formidable Oak, Dean manages to tell Olimar that he saw the Plasm Wraith with Louie before he is captured by the Plasm Wraith. After making it out of the Formidable Oak, Olimar fights the Plasm Wraith, which slinks away underground after being defeated. With Dean still being held captive by the Plasm Wraith, Olimar and Louie head down into a nearby cave to rescue him.
At the bottom of the cave, Olimar and Louie discover the Umibozu, a mysterious lifeform that was created by humans in an attempt to create the perfect specimen. Unhappy with their decision to play god, the Umibozu turned on them and released radiation into the air, killing them all. It tells Olimar that it has been trying to capture him ever since he first landed on Earth, and once it has managed to capture Olimar, it will morph into him and fly back to Hocotate, where it will then wipe out the Hocotatians.
Olimar fights the Umibozu, but to no avail. Luckily, the Koppaites manage to make it down to them just in time, and Alph gives Olimar the Mega Whistle, a giant stone whistle that, when blown, will summon every Pikmin on PNF-404 to fight with him. He blows the whistle and defeats the Umibozu. After it melts away into nothingness, Olimar and everyone else decide that even though the Umibozu has been defeated once and for all, they can't be certain that the planet is still safe, and they take a vow to not return. Everyone goes home and the story ends.
Gameplay
Because of the grand scope of the game's world, Olimar can now ride in the S.S. Dolphin to get around quickly. With other ship parts, Olimar can also access new functions of the Dolphin, such as an Ejector Seat, or using the Nova Blaster while flying to fight airborne enemies.

Caves
Difficulties
Pikmin Odyssey does not have ordinary difficulty options. Instead, the player can make their own difficulty when they start a new save, choosing from several different modifiers to apply:
- Full-Metal: all crystal gains an opaque silver color and takes even more hits to destroy.
- Repossesion: enemies will come back to life at night, possessed by their vengeful spirits.
- Hazard a Guess: all hazards are twice as potent, killing Pikmin faster.
