Plot

Opening

Olimar sits with his family at his Hocotate home, having dinner with them as any other day. Suddenly, there's a knock at the door, and Olimar goes to see who it is. It's none other than Chacho, delivering a very important message:

Olimar! I need your help! Louie ran off with the main company ship, and he took all of the pokos we had gotten earlier! If we can't get them back... Hocotate Freight is doomed! Meet me tomorrow morning, please!

Olimar, already feeling exhausted, nods and mutters in agreement, and his son stares in disbelief. After Chacho runs off, flailing his arms as he sprints down the street back to Hocotate Freight, Olimar closes the door. He looks over at the Groovy Long Legs bobblehead sitting on the windowsill next to the door and returns to the dinner table.

The next morning, Olimar leaves his home, gets in his car, and drives off to work. A few intersections and turns later, Olimar parks on the company office's lot and steps out of his car. After meeting up with Chacho, Olimar is sent out with an employee by the name of Charlie, and the both of them get into a spare ship and blast off. Chacho waves them goodbye as he stands facing the ship, but he jumps up in surprise, remembering a box of Pikpik carrots that he runs inside to get and back out to nothing as the ship is already leaving Hocotate's atmosphere.

Olimar and Charlie are soon already approaching PNF-404. However, the Hocotate Ship is leaving the planet's atmosphere at almost the same time as they are entering it. The two nearly collide but a stray meteor hits both ships, sending them flying through space as an orange-green swirl and hurdling toward another planet: Icarus 172.

Tutorial

Olimar wakes up inside the ship, which lies on a ledge overlooking a shallow pool of water. Olimar gets out of the ship, but Charlie is nowhere to be seen. After a bit of looking, he says to himself:

Let's hope that Charlie is alright. I can't believe that double crash... Oh well, I've gotta get out of here someh–

A Pikmin appears, and squeaks at Olimar. This Pikmin is a Blue Pikmin.

Is that... A Blue Pikmin? But how did it get here? This isn't PNF-404... How fascinating! Well, maybe I can find some way to use them to get back out...

The Blue Pikmin looks at Olimar quizzically. Olimar smiles at the Pikmin and walks towards it. The Blue Pikmin becomes more alert, and jumps up before running back and through the water, turning into a small cave as Olimar follows. Olimar jumps as he sees the Blue onion stuck in some Tangleweed. Olimar then recalls how to whistle Pikmin and throw them. Upon throwing the five Blue Pikmin at the Onion, it falls and immediately roots, and the Pikmin begin to do a little dance. So begins Day 1.

Day 1 does not end until the tutorial is completed. While the area appears as it usually does, Olimar can not interact with some its features. Olimar explores his surroundings, treading further into the area and relearning more of what he can accomplish. Then the first big fight happens. It is against a Titan Starnel waiting in a large crater in the sand. After the day ends, Olimar gets his first email since he crashlanded:

Olimar! Not only do we need the money back, but our last cash grab was a failure! I need more treasures, quick!

The rest of the story has Olimar adventuring across Icarus 172 in search of Louie, among other things.
