Pikmin: The Open Galaxy is an open-world Pikmin game created by Omtegu. It was released to close out the Nintendo Switch's lifespan on a high note.

Plot

Olimar must revisit the Pikmin Planet again to repay an even bigger debt Hocotate Freight has built up, but this time he is sent with a crew of seven fellow workers. When they approach the planet, the ship breaks into 8 pieces, each corresponding to each of the 8 areas, and the group is completely separated.

Olimar wakes up next to a Red Pikmin, and he sits up to look around, finding himself and the Red Pikmin in an open plain on a hill, with bulborbs and such nearby. He realizes his crew is gone, and immediately starts on the main task. The ensuing tutorial requires Olimar to get 3 ship parts to unlock base moves, and if he wanders too far from his objectives, Olimar will get nervous and turn around, stating that the ship is destroyed and must be restored to a useable state before sunset.

After the tutorial, Olimar, now armed with 21 Pikmin, sets off to explore a small patch of the plain he refused to visit before. He then sees a cave nearby, and he eventually finds Yellow Pikmin in it. After Olimar and his Pikmin leave the cave, the day ends, and Olimar can land in any area he wants to to find ship parts or rescue his crewmates. Each crewmate he rescues has something to contribute.

Locations

Plains

The Plains is a tutorial area with 1 cave and 2 Flarlics. Red Pikmin and Yellow Pikmin are found here, and after finding Blue Pikmin elsewhere, so is the Ice Onion. No crewmates, besides Olimar himself, are found here. One of the Flarlics requires Winged Pikmin. The initial limit of on-field Pikmin is 30.

Caves
  • Electric Beginning: this cave has a metal theme and 2 sublevels. 15 Yellow Pikmin are found on sublevel 2.

Forest

The Forest is typically the second area to be explored, as Olimar suggests finding the scientist, whose signal originates from this area. It contains 3 caves and 3 landing sites. The scientist is located here, but in a cave, specifically the Hole of Hope. The Yellow Onion is located near the back of the area, beyond a bridge needing 30 raw material to be built. There are 2 piles of raw material, but even by collecting every raw material in both piles, Olimar will need 5 from elsewhere.

Caves
  • Toxic Tunnels: this cave has the basic cave theme and 3 sublevels. The first sublevel has 2 treasures, and while the second has 1 treasure, it has 10 White Pikmin to make up for it. The final sublevel has four treasures, and one of them lies beyond an electric gate.
  • Hopeless Hole: this cave has the basic cave theme and 5 sublevels. There are 7 treasures in this cave, but no sublevel has a set amount of treasures in it. The final sublevel has an Empress Bulblax.
  • Hole of Hope: this cave has 2 sublevels, and is in direct contrast to the Hopeless Hole. Sublevel 1 has 1 treasure, and sublevel 2 has 2 treasures and the scientist. The music that plays here is a remix of the Forest of Hope's.

River

The River is an area with no caves whatsoever, instead having a large Twilight River-esque quest to build a bridge to reach Winged Pikmin, with its special pieces being found here. Then, after unlocking the Winged Pikmin, they can be used to lift a bamboo gate, beyond which is a small hill that appears to be a mountain to Olimar. At the top is the Scornet Maestro, and upon defeating it, the zoologist is freed.

Swamp

The Swamp is focused on White Pikmin and Purple Pikmin, and contains a large amount of poison enemies, along with a Puffstool. There is also 1 cave.

The White Onion is located near the back of the area and reaching it requires White Pikmin to knock out some pipes. There is also a Flarlic weighing 101 units.

Caves
  • Hefty Hallway: this cave has 6 sublevels. The first has 5 wild Purple Pikmin and 3 treasures, the second and third have 3 treasures each, the fourth has a Violet Candypop Bud, and the fifth has an Empress Puffstool. The Empress Puffstool is significantly more difficult than the ordinary Puffstool, having more health and faster attacks. The sixth sublevel has 10 wild Purple Pikmin and 5 treasures.
