The Tuba Stakeshrew is a miniboss in Pikmin: Interstellar Cryptid. It is a massive Bugle Stakeshrew, having grown exponentially due to its age. As with its smaller counterpart, it is an echidna-like creature with a grey, funnel-like snout, a hide of brown quills, and a pink underbelly. Its green eyes have sunken into its head, making it look oddly grizzled. It is initially found snuffling about the fourth sublevel of the Hall of Dreams, surrounded by three of its lesser brethren. When approached, it will engage the squad. Typically, it bunkers down and inhales directly in front of it like a Waddlequaff. However, its breath is incredibly strong and grows even more powerful during the last seconds of its attack. Sometimes, it will rear up to do this attack instead. The resulting vortex catches dust particles in the process, eventually causing irritation and forcing it into a coughing fit. During this, it coughs clouds of dust that make all Pikmin but Pumpkin Pikmin panic. It may also cough up gobs of faint yellow phlegm that functions like an adhesive, slowing down leaders and Pikmin that step into it. When it stands up, Pikmin can be thrown onto its stomach to attack. If thirty Pikmin are latched on, they will tip the stakeshrew over and onto its back, allowing for a lot of damage. Feeding it a bomb rock is also viable, though it tends to make the beast cough up deluges of phlegm afterward.

Notes

Olimar's notes

Bugle stakeshrews have been observed growing to sizes once thought to be unprecedented amongst rodents. As with most cases, this is usually a result of excess in food resources, leading to the creature's life growing stagnant. Once it reaches the size of this specimen, it will forgo its usual diet of smaller insects and instead go for much larger morsels like lithopod larvae. There have even been reports of one particular specimen feeding on a whole red bulborb, though this claim has yet to be validated.

Louie's notes

Mince the meat with peas, carrots, and sliced radish. Add a bit of red salt and thyme, and finally bake until black. The mix can fill up to sixty-five and a half personal meat pies! A dollop of tomato sauce adds some welcomed acidity to the finished result.

Bentley's notes

If I were ever stranded on this planet with nowhere to turn to, I would try to seek out one of these mammoth rodents. Their hides are so spiny, and they are just so large, that if I were to cling to their underbelly, nothing will ever find me!

Eloise's notes

I never really wanted to stare into its raw, fleshy tube mouth, but yet here we are. It is still pretty cute, though, if a little disheveled. I'll be the first to give it some lotion for its eczema-laden skin.
